Well there’s two ways of answering that, the shorter one is to say yes. Sennheiser has made some fantastic earphones, from the very affordable ones to the recently launched exuberantly priced Orpheus. The CX 180 is their entry level champ, a budget legend that is easily one of the most popular earphones sold in India. Creating an upgrade for such a popular product was definitely a challenge.
Safe to say, Sennheiser has met with it well, the new CX 213s are better in almost every respect. The individual changes may be incremental, but there's an overall improvement that is significant.
To start off with the little things, there are a ton of colour options. The rear tips of the earpieces are made of good quality plastics that are soft to the touch. Cable noise has also been dramatically reduced.
Let’s come to the most important aspect of any audio product, the sound. Sound wise, they are similar to their highly popular predecessor, save for the soundstage, which has witnessed a considerable improvement. Also, the extreme highs aren’t as harsh or sibilant as the former. All good improvements to let Sennheiser keep the budget legend accolade with their new CX 213.
Sometimes you don’t need to fix it if it ain’t broken. So the best bits have been carried forward to the new product. The fingertip styled ergonomic design and the quality cable. Let’s not forget the unmatched 2-Year warranty program.
Overall, for an asking price below Rs. 1000, the CX 213s not only best their predecessor, but also create a new benchmark for budget earphones.
Job well done Sennheiser.
