Not an audiophile, but not an average music listener either.

Balaji Ramachari gives us his review on Beyerdynamic - DT 990 Pro- Studio Monitoring Headphones

Design & Build

The headphone is super comfortable, has a long non detachable coiled type chord which could be a issue to some. This product is not recommended for someone who plans to use it with a smartphone/iPod and an amp is a must unless you want to buy the 32 ohms version.

Sound & Performance

I have tried a lot of headphones starting from in ear to on ear, this is my third over ear headphone. The first one was Audio Technica ATH-M30X and the next one was Audio Technica ATH-MSR7, which is raved to be one of the best sounding over ear headphones in a budget. I have to compare DT 990 Pro this with the ATH-MSR7. This is a 250 ohm high impedance open style head phone. The DT 990 are an open style headphone. They are very smooth, I cannot say the mid range is recessed but it has a bit which makes it more smoother and enjoyable to listen, the treble notes just float around in your head making it more enjoyable.

Audio Gear Used

I would recommend the use of an external DAC/ AMP to use this 250 configuration with. I knowingly bought this one as I wanted to experience open style head phone and wanted to really see if an high impedance head phone adds any more clarity to the music. I use "Power amp" application if I am playing music without amp and "Neutron" when using it with amp. My amp is creative sound blaster E5 (portable) which can drive headphones up to 600 ohms!

Final Verdict

I am very happy with my purchase.

Pros

1. Smooth sound delivery
2. Excellent sound stage and instrument separation (I can clearly see the difference in instrument separation compared to my ATH-MSR7 which is a closed type headphone in the same price)
3. Value for money, may not in our market standards but compared to other professional headphones like Shure, etc.
4. Good built quality, expect it to last very long

Cons

I cannot say it is a Con as I lack that experience, is it the slightly recessed mids? But I think that's what makes it smooth compared to my ATH- MSR7.

After living with it for more than a month, the DT 990 has changed a bit, the burn in has done some magic. The slightly recessed mid range is not present any more and the high frequency notes has smoothened a bit, still unmatched in detail as well. Now it seems more perfect. Unmatchable sound stage and true sound, responds well to all eq settings, high & low frequencies. Unmatched value for money, highly recommended !!
