The ifi Audio - xCAN is probably gonna top my list of good purchases this year.
Fantastic on power output (upto 1000 mw on Balanced), great build quality especially the analogue domain boasts like: Bass / Presence / Bass+Presence and the rather impressive 3D soundstage boost.
The power available ensures that the sound is around 95% of a desktop all-in-one like Topping DX3 Pro, with just a teensy perceived less slam and that’s mighty impressive for a pocket size setup. Then it pulls ahead of the DX3 Pro with Balanced outs and those added analogue boosts.
Nit-picking: I must say the hyped Bluetooth quality that reviews go on about is good but not great. For instance a Shanling M0 with a lineout on low-gain (its always a low-gain as a preference for me) is way superior to the ESS Sabre DAC on xCAN on resolution and the xCAN sounds warm with Bluetooth.
I’ve done A/B vs other AAC TO AAC streamers and I can confirm that that ifi Audio Bluetooth is as good as it can get, naturally wired is best.
You sure can still use and be happy with Bluetooth capability when on the move but a wired line-in is the way to enjoy this and to be fair this is just how it was intended and to stack with XDSD if you’re a Burr Brown DAC fan (I’m not).
Also the Bluetooth now is not buggy on reconnections like XDSD.
Overall a killer product and one of the few pocketable portables that can drive almost all cans especially my AKGs K7s with all the verve and vigour needed.
