Chord Electronics took flight from an idea that was born from a young electronics engineer whilst working in Avionics in the early 1980s. John Franks (Now, the founder & CEO of Chord Electronics) worked for a large avionics company, Marconi Avionics, making electronics for aircraft. He worked in a specialised field of electronics which required developing highly advanced power supplies that were both ultra-reliable and efficient.
Working within Aviation Industry needed perfection and super attention to detail, at the same time being compact and light. John’s particular area of expertise was ultra-high-frequency power supplies and his definitive knowledge in power supply design enabled his unique concept of linking an amplifier’s power supply rails together using a strong magnetic flux within a specialised, high-frequency transformer. This technique was named Dynamic Coupling.
Dynamic Coupling allows the amplifier stages to be much faster, more transparent and agiler. This innovative approach to design became paramount at Chord Electronics! Whereas, their perfection and attention to detail even if the cost of production increases, is built from the values Frank learnt at the aviation industry.
John waited for years to make the right consumer electronic product without being too pricey. Thus, finally in 1989, Chord Electronics was found. There has been no looking back ever since. From EMI’s Abbey Road Studios, Sony (New York), Toshiba (Japan) and many others, including George Lucas’s studio, Skywalker Sound, Chord have managed to be the brand for professionals and audiophiles alike.
Their heart, however, belongs to the consumers where their major efforts of development lie. They are constantly trying to push the technologies to the limit in both digital and power amplifier world. Their range of mobile Amp/DACs lets you carry the Hi-Res music on-the-go. Whereas their desktop amplifiers provide the best of what sound can offer you.
