Open-Back Design

Headphones with an open-back design, allow air to pass through the earcups. This means that Open-Backs do not block any noise from around you, as closed-backs do, and music being heard will also leak outside to people around you. So they can only be heard in a quiet environment.

However, Open-back headphones do sound more natural and open. Open-back headphones create a feeling of space, presenting audio as if you are sitting at a live concert. Audiophiles swear by open-back headphones, and they sound quite different to closed-backs.

These headphones are perfect for critical listening sessions, mixing and mastering music. They have an accurate soundstage presentation and precise imaging.

Needs Amplification

Headphones and IEMs require a certain level of power to sound their best and work at their full potential. When your headphones or IEMs are underpowered, they can sound thin or muffled.

Amplifiers are required to provide adequate power to your headphone or IEMs to perform at their best. Simply put, amplifiers allow a weak audio signal to be boosted to a powerful one.

To put it into perspective, devices such as your phones and laptops come with an amplifier, but they offer very limited output power. This output may not be sufficient to power headphones and IEMs to shine at their best. This is where a dedicated amplifier is required to deliver adequate power to hear your music in all its glory.

Replaceable Cables

A pair of headphones with a replaceable cable has many benefits, and one of them is if the connecting cable has a problem, it doesn’t mean that you have to buy a new one. If the connecting cable gets pulled or damaged, you can replace it and keep using your good-old headphones or IEMs. This way, your headphones will be protected and will last longer. With the advancements in cable manufacturing, you now get a variety of replacement cables with various termination options, lengths and quality.

This headphone is a classic. The Sennheiser HD650 isn't a new headphone, but it's still a favourite amongst audiophiles. The sound signature can be best described as 'reference grade' because so many people over the years have used this as a benchmark for use in the studio and at home. Pair it with a decent tube amplifier to hear it sing.

A comfortable allrounder

I have been using HD650 for two years now and this is my experience:

Sound:
This does not have a neutral sound signature - it inclines towards darker tone. The bass, even though slightly more pronounced, sounds amazing – with a solid body albeit a bit slow, and blends beautifully with the mids. The mids are clear, slightly dark. Both male and female voices sound beautiful. Highs are the weakest point of this headphone. They are laid back and not bright. Personally I prefer this, because this allows for prolonged listening sessions without getting fatigued whatsoever.

I primarily listen to western classical music. For specifically classical – string instruments sounds wonderful with intricate details, percussions are good as well – but bit slow. For Piano though – I am not very happy with a rather thin sound. However – this just maybe due to the dac and amp. Indian songs are reproduced with excellent details with a soothing quality. Jazz sounds exemplary in my experience.

Source dependency:
HD650 sound quality is highly dependent on the source. I have high quality 320kbps MP3 which sound surprisingly veiled. FLAC does better, but even a very minute noise in the file is noticeable. WAV sounds the best. I did not notice any significant quality improvement with DSDs.

Different amps and dacs sound very different with this headphone. Better to mix and match depending on music preference. Note that you need a decent set of dac+amp for this headphone – else it will not do justice to the quality of sound HD650 can produce.

I use Fiio X5 II and Fiio E12A (this has a brighter tone which complements nicely with darker tone of HD650) as my all-time-use setup with HD650.

Summary:
Paired with a good amp and dac, HD650 is an amazing headphone for relaxed and lazy listening. This headphone is pure joy to listen to even for a prolonged time. If you just want to close your eyes and enjoy the music without being analytical – HD650 is possibly the best headphon...

Best bargain audiophile headphones

This headphone is more refined version of all time classic hd600. Initially it sounded muffled and bass heavy but after about 100 hours with isotek burn in track it sounds extremly clean and detailed. Bass and mid bass are lot fuller and sound has lot more body. Treble is one of the most clean and refined you would ever hear. There are no peaks to frequency response and sound is extremely smooth. I use it with chord mojo and it does full justice to mojo's insane resolution. People coming from beyerdynamic sound may feel the combo with mojo a bit on warmer side but I bet mojo plus hd650 combo is impossible to beat even with much more expensive headphones simply because this headphone has one of the least distortion figures. Impedance of 300 ohm goes very well with mojo and mojo gives plenty of volume and I never needed to go beyond green to light green volume of mojo and still plenty of volume range of mojo left. People looking for high end sound need not to see beyond thid headphone. Only one thing is that to enjoy the music fully with this headphone you need to listen in a calm environment as it is a open back design and easily affected by ambient sound. Overall great buy for audiophile and all music lovers alike.

So pleasant that one could call them the "Bose of Audiophile Phones"

These are very early days of my usage but the Sennheiser HD 650 do sound wonderful. They not as spacious or as sharp as the AKG K712 - the soundstage is kind of narrow and the sound is on the warmer side. And to be honest, they really needed better design on these - the plastic headband seems a little on the fragile side. But heck, you forgot all that when you hear them. I would say that they are best suited for music because they sound incredibly, well, for want of a better word "pleasant." There is the slightest stress on bass - about as much as you can get on an open-back headphone set - but the overall effect is very pleasant. I love to call them the "Bose of Audiophile Phones." Yes, they do benefit from a decent DAC - I mainly used a Fiio Q1 Mark 2, but the interesting part is that they worked reasonably well even off Apple's lighting and USB Type C connectors, which is surprising. I hope to be using better DACs and let's see how that changes matters.

I first heard them in 2010, and well, I recently got them for about Rs 22,495 - close to half what they once cost. One heck of a deal.

HI there,
