DAC Chip
You may not even realise it, but most of us use a digital-to-analogue converter (commonly known as a DAC) daily. Built into your computers, tablets and smartphones, a DAC is fundamental to unlocking the convenience of digital music. Any device that acts as a digital sound source will need a DAC to convert digital audio to analog. A DAC converts the digital information stored in “0s and 1s” into an analog signal that's passed to speakers or headphones and ultimately our ear. In short, DACs play a large part in making digital music hearable.

While this technical process is undoubtedly impressive, the DAC embedded into your smartphones or laptops is nowhere good enough to listen to your favourite music recordings in high quality. So, if you want to listen to music in high quality, an external DAC is essential to allow headphones or speakers to perform at their potential. An external DAC, first and foremost, will improve audio quality dramatically.

Volume Controls

If your DAC & Amps include volume controls or volume rockers, you can easily change the volume with a button press or volume knob turn.

DAC & Amps that have volume controls make its operation incredibly simple; turn up the volume on your smartphone or your source devices and then change the volume on DAC & Amps to the desired level.

This design feature allows you to have complete control over the desired volume according to your listening preferences.

SCALE-UP YOUR MUSIC WITH XILINX XC7A200T FPGA

At the heart of the Chord Hugo M Scaler is the Xilinx XC7A200T FPGA (field-programmable gate array) chip which provides 740 DSP cores and a whopping 10,15,808 taps. The FPGA-based WTA (Watts Transient Alignment) filtering technology is very effective in improving the sound quality. This upscaler can upgrade standard audio at 44.1kHz up to 705.6kHz i.e. 16 times that of a CD’s 44.1kHz native resolution.

While optimised to be used with select Chord Electronics DACs, the Hugo M Scaler can work with other DACs as well. You can extend the 96kHz performance of the Qutest, Dave or Hugo TT2 to 768kHz with the dual BNC sockets. Other outputs include single BNC at 352.8/384kHz and optical S/PDIF at 176.4/192kHz. You can also connect to a variety of digital sources with the two BNC sockets, two Toslink sockets and a Type-B USB input.

Chord Hugo m scaler the vinyl killer

Chord's philosophy of using custom long length digital filters programmed into FPGAs continues in the form of Hugo m scaler. The product uses same tech as in Blu mk2 cd transport but in much more compact and cheaper package. The first impression is that the device feels much smaller actually than in images on web. It is extremely well built and be tucked anywhere in your system except in very closed spaces as it can be a bit warm(not hot) during operation. It requires about 70 to 80 hours but in imho. Through its dual bnc coaxial out it outputs upto 768khz upscaled output, filtering out all noise while preserving the timing of transients courtesy 1M tap WTA filter. The output can be fed to dual bnc compatible chord dacs like qutest, Hugo 2, tt2 and Dave. The output of a single bnc (half of 768khz) can be fed to any other compatible dac of even other brands. Though the full benefit of m scaler will not be available out of single bnc. Now coming to sound. The sound via Hugo 2 is changed into a much more precise soundstage, focussed vocals , punchy textured bass with a clear sense reverb. Vocals become scarily realistic . One can feel the singer in the room. The extra details are not at the cost of increased brightness and overall impression is like a original analog master vinyl and even better in many areas like higher s/n, better frequency extension and no click or pops. Imho this device is vinyl killer with a compatible dac. Must must have for an audiophile willing to spend for ultimate transparency and realism.

CHORD M Scaler, first impressions

My setup: JRiver MC 28 in Bit Perfect audio mode => M Scaler => Qutest => Topping Pre90 => Emotiva XPA-DR2 => Klipsch RP-8000F. I connected M Scaler & Qutest in dual data mode to upsample regular 44.1kHz PCM to 705.6kHz. To activate dual data mode, care needs to be taken to connect BNC 1 & 2 (from M Scaler) to BNC 1 & 2 (on Qutest), respectively. Select "Max" via "OP SR" button on M Scaler. On Qutest, the "Input" button glows green confirming dual data mode. In case, Qutest denies moving to dual data mode, lookout for loose BNC connector. I used the (75 ohms) BNC cables that accompanied M Scaler. Achieving this setup took some time + few email exchanges with Chord UK. Chord should improve the user manual for Qutest & M Scaler with setup details specific to dual data mode. Coming to musical experience: With M Scaler in the loop, the sound become warm. I could feel drastic reduction in harshness. Bass, Guitar & Piano sounded magical. Depth & soundstage was simply awesome. Overall, you can continue listening music for hours without ear fatigue :)
Many thanks to Headphone Zone for hosting fantastic audiophile grade audio gears.

Hey Bhaskar,

The Hugo M Scaler experience.

The Hugo M scaler is barely four days old in my system, so giving it a proper review would be a bit premature. I’m using it with a non-chord DAC, so the upsampling is limited to 176 kHz. Even with one hand tied behind its back, it has made a substantial difference to the sound quality. Micro details are greatly transparent even at very low volumes. Truly impressive. But the real review is of Headphone Zone. I finished my purchase at around 2pm and the m-scaler was at my doorstep the next day by 11 am. I live in Delhi. My experience with HFZ has always been wonderful. They’ve treated all my issues with utmost seriousness and have gone out of the way to address them. I am a happy customer. Thank you HFZ.

Hey there, thank you for the great review and ratings! So delighted that you are loving your purchase. Hope you had a comfortable shopping experience. Cheers!
