FINE-TUNED FOR PERFECTION

Experience accurate sound with the Etymotic ER2 series of earphones. The ER2 is available in two variants, a Studio and eXtended Response Edition. The only difference between the two models lies in the lower (bass) frequencies. The Studio Edition ER2SE is tuned to have a flat frequency response. The eXtended Response ER2XR has an emphasised bass, adding 1-2dB to the mid-bass and 3-4dB to the sub-bass. The rest of the frequencies are practically identical to the ER2SE. The ER2SE is ideal for sound engineers and audiophiles looking for in-ear monitors that are easy to drive while offering accurate audio reproduction. The ER2XR is favoured by those who enjoy the extra bass presence and body when listening to their music. The extra bass is done tastefully without turning the ER2XR into a bass-heavy IEM.

The ER2SE shells are made of anodised aluminium, CNC machined with extremely tight tolerances. Using a single dynamic driver allows for a very accurate IEM without the added complexity of crossovers and helps keep the aluminium body small and slim. A strengthened cable that is robust is part of the Etymotic ER2 earphones. Their earpieces are anodised and constructed of premium metal that provides an ideal in-ear fit. The earphone's included cables are replaceable if necessary because they are detachable.

The Real Fun Reference IEM

ER2s are truly among the best IEM in sub-10K mark. They offer good accessories, great built quality and a tremendously fun but DF neutral (with a 2-3dB boost in sub-bass) sound sound signature. It seems Etymotic have rectified the concerns of the previously released BA IEMs. This doesn't mean there are no trade-offs, but it is inconsequential when compared to the goods. The reputation of Etymotic truly precedes the package delivered and it doesn't let down. The transient response is agile and bass attack is so dynamic - probably nothing comes close. The Starfield may offer a better technical performance, but the timbre and tonal characteristics of ER2s are far superior. I might even compare it to my some hybrids like Legacy 5 or some offerings from BQEYZ, but the cohesiveness of a DD can't be undermined. Also, I am not a proponent of the Chi-Fi tuning expect Moondrop. Etymotic's tuning is so natural and clean, I might not even go back to my previous go-to IEM A&K Billie Jean. They can scale well to a powerful source and totally do justice as an on-stage monitoring IEM, especially for drummers and bassists.
One thing to be noted is the soundstage and imaging. Due to the deep insertion, the instruments / vocals don't seem to come from around as you might expect in some recordings. But the instrument separation is top-notch and there is lot of lateral depth to the audio. It is a godsent IEM for binaural recordings. I truly have a soft spot for this IEM and it's just *kisses* good.

Hey Pritish, we're so happy to hear that this product is meeting your expectations. Thanks for this wonderful detailed review. We hope to see you again soon! :)

They rock, if you get the seal right.

I purchased the XR version from HPZ and was thrilled when I tried them on. The IEMs are super light and comfy. I tried the cylindrical foam tips included in the box, but for some reason I couldn't get the right seal, hence the bass was underwhelming and they sounded kinda squeaky.

The next day, I switched to the triple flange tips included in the box, and my mind was blown. Having got the right seal, I could feel the noise isolation even before I started playing a track. Their sound signature is excellent, every detail is crystal clear and with the noise isolation, the bass response is great. So I'd recommend to spend some time with the ear tips till you get a good seal.

The only concern I have is that the cable looks very delicate, and the drivers have this notch thingy, due to which they don't fit into other MMCX cables. In short, a great pair of IEMs at this price point, that can give more expensive multi-driver IEMs a run for their money.

PS: Team Headphone Zone thanks for getting these beauties, I love them. Also, please stock up on some replacement cables, will be needing them a year or so down the line. 🙂

Sleeper IEMs : ER2XR

Not much interst is shown in these but let me tell you these are the real deal. If one can get the fit right nothing much at more than even double or triple their price can match them in sound quality.

These are neutral with a slight tilt in sub bass that does not intrude into those lovely mids. Some bright female voice recordings could sound a bit shouty but that is the only negative that I really found in these. The treble is again lovely, extended without a hint of sibilance.

Being the cheapest ETYs the retail package is underwhelming and there should be more tips to try especially double flanged ones especially considering that the fit makes it or breaks it for most folks trying ETYs.

Another thing is that the cable looks extremely fragile and Headphone Zone must stock replacement ETY cables as the mmcx connectors are not the standard ones but proprietary ETY design ones.

In short just do yourself a favour and try these if you are loking for a DD iem for upto three times it's price.

Poor quality control and unreliable HPZ returns policy. Buyers beware!

Call me a conspiracy theorist and downvote this review all you want but first my Shure Aonic 4 and now the ER2, both plagued with shoddy build and quality control issues and dead within weeks - I see a pattern! This ER2 started losing volume in one of the unit and then died completely only to come alive randomly when left alone. Of course, this "intermittent revival" was grounds enough for the helpful staff at HPZ to deny my return request even after I showed on video that no was sound coming from the unit. And even when it works, there is a clear difference in sound output between the units which you'll know when you plug them in your ears which the testing staff HPZ won't do because of hygiene reason (understandable, but what a convenient loophole for them to evade providing returns!).
And yes, I have tried switching cables, trying different cables but the issues is clearly in the unit itself.

So TLDR, buy them at your own risk. And for that matter, buy any American brands at your own risk! (not just my Shure and now Etymotic but I have gotten burned by recent GoPro and Fitbit purchase as well)

Endgame iem for tonality and realism

I'd seen this iem on crins list and then this "troll" named Sharur started posted about the er2se on youtube. When i was looking to buy er2xr, it was out of stock. So i bought the er2se. Getting it it was one of a kind a neutral signature truly. But it was lacking in bass impact. Songs which needed a bit of rumble to sound good, it did not deliver on those. So what did i do. I got the xr when it came back in stock 2 months or so later. Er2xr is is what i was looking for. It has bass impact without being overpowering, sounds fuller while still being a neutral iem. Do not get the er2se unless you have heard something like the tin t2 and like it (a lot). Most people should wait for the xr variant once its available. Another thing is the double flange tips which are much more comfortable than the triple flange, only come included with the XR variant. Hope this helped. Rest assured this is an excellent iem!
