Schiit - Bifrost
Don’t sweat it, This Schiit product is covered by a 5 Years manufacturer's warranty.
"The Bifrost is just the first Schiit DAC, a fully-balanced DAC and a totally maxed-out DAC are in the works.
"Regardless of price, the Schiit Bifrost is a carefully designed and beautifully built DAC. In fact, the Bifrost has the highest ratio of value to price of any product I've reviewed."Read More
After 3 reminders to review this product I am finally getting down to it. It has only been a couple of weeks since I received the product and hooked it up. The build is very good and the DAC feels pretty solid as you unpack it. I like the clean, simple design without any unnecessary displays of filter options.
The performance of this DAC is nothing short of fantastic - I was really looking forward to listening to this DAC to see if the Multibit architecture and Schiit's proprietary closed form filter is any different from the more common delta sigma types. Trust me - it makes a huge difference. With recordings that have metallic instruments (eg. cymbals / trumpets) I had got used to some amount of harshness. With this DAC there is none of that harshness (and the fatigue that it causes) that you tend to associate with a digital source component and recording. This does not mean it is dull or slow in any way. This DAC is extremely fast & well integrated through the frequency range. Vocal based music is especially beautiful. The bass is rich and fast with no overhang or sluggishness. In short - you get loads of resolution and detail without the harshness that comes with it. There is absolutely nothing I can fault with this product. It is now a little difficult to distinguish whether I am listening to a CD or LP on the system (this is a good thing as in the past I found the analogue side sounded far more appealing)
I think Schiit makes exceptional DACs and they all sound exceptionally good at the price. I would suggest everyone seriously consider the Multibit versions as they are totally unique (there are other companies that have the Multibit architecture but they are all far more expensive). Depending on the qualities of your system you may also prefer the delta sigma versions but I would go with the Multibit versions anyway.
I would like to note that this DAC requires a long time to burn in. It also tends to sound better after it has been switched on and...
First I would like to thank HZ for their prompt service and flexibility. You guys rock!! It is really hard to review a DAC and for someone like me who is into automobiles and listening to music is just a hobby, but a serious one which at times drains a lot of money .. It is fun though. We live for it is it not ?! The quest for the perfect clarity and enjoyment of your favourite music is what which draws us to buy different headphones and I thought it was time to keep the source clean. We all know Schiit products are good and have high VFM and with that trust I had gone with the best possible DAC I can afford. How did I get to believe that Bifrost Multibit should be better than Bifrost, the price difference is huge though ? I used to hate a product the moment it sounds a bit digital to my ears, the worst one I owned was a Creative Sound blaster E5 and the best one was the Chord Mojo. It was the Chord Mojo which showed me the importance of DAC and what difference it makes to the sound, the moment I heard the word ‘Multibit” the Chord Mojoish sound caught my imagination and all write ups sounded like it is heading there, see I am only guessing So did it head there ? Was the sound closer to analogue ? I did a comparison with the inbuilt DAC of ifi micro idsd and Schiit Bifrost Multibit both feeding into Schiit Lyr2 and heard through Hifiman HE-560. The distortion levels are a bit lower and the voices sounded more real, it was not a night and day difference though but I was happy I got the best fed to my ears. The quality of headphones do play a major role in showing up the difference in the DAC quality as the lower end headphones do have a distortion within themselves which cannot help see the difference in the DAC upgrade. I could feel it when I compared it with my Beyerdynamic DT990 and Hifiman HE-560. The next question which was going on in my mind for long time was also answered, does DACS affect the tonality of sound like more bass, mid-range etc. I guess i...
Using it with my imac and woo audio fireflies wa7. Blissfull experience. Bypassing the dac on the wa7 with this has enhanced the experience a lot. Loving it.
