Etymotic means “true to the ear”. This audio company was founded in the year 1983 by Mead Killion, PhD. At its core, Etymotic Research is an engineering-based research, development and manufacturing company. It was founded to develop products that assess hearing with precision, aids people with hearing challenges, protects hearing and improves music listening for both musicians as well as music lovers around the globe.
With extensive experience in acoustic research and hearing aid industry, Etymotic is credited to be the inventor of in ear earphones. The initial design of Etymotic earphones consisted of balanced armature drivers which acted as a standard for high-grade in-ear earphones. The first Etymotic earphones were utilised for diagnostic testing and precision auditory research: the ER-1, ER-2, and the ER-3. After this, they came up with noise-isolating high fidelity in-ear earphone ER-4 in 1991 which formed the basis for in-ears around the world and resulted in the formation of a new category in consumer electronics.
The concepts of Innovation, Education and Hearing Conversation are at the centre of Etymotic's mission. Etymotic products aid various professionals and other consumers around the world including scientists, hearing practitioners, hearing-impaired consumers, musicians etc. The Etymotic team has audio engineers, audiologists and musicians who have worked collectively to create more than 100 patents (issued and pending). Around 60 members of the Etymotic team are successful musicians.
