First off the pros:
1. Good passive noise isolation. That's the reason i bought these for.
2. Excellent build quality. Sort of like the Mercedes of headphones.
3. Quality detachable cable.
4. Portable (sort of), with a nice carry case included.
5. Great sound for a closed-back.
These are expensive cans! So the most important question is how do they sound?
Some of you must be wondering (or hoping) if a high-end pair of closed back such
these can match the sound of a good pair of full size open-back headphone. The
answer unfortunately is a mixed bag. These are definitely good.. maybe close to the AKG K712 pro
- which is almost one third in price - in many aspects. The k712 has better bass and
a more open and bigger sound stage. The treble is equally detailed (and somewhat bright)
but more refined than the k712 pro. Mid range may be more neutral &slightly better than the k712.
But my Audeze LCD X (which cost 20k more) is in a different league. Compared to the LCD X the bass
on the t5p is rolled off and bloated in certain places and doesn't sound natural.
But I hear more treble detail from the t5p. Overall no match for the sublime Lcd x. So can you
get away with buying just one headphone, one that can provide comfort, portability, noise isolation
and great sound? If you are an audiophile; not quite. Buy these only if isolation and portability is
important to you, otherwise there are better sounding open-back cans out there.
The sound has changed substantially after putting in more hours. The bass bloat i had mentioned earlier is mostly gone and overall the bass is much more tighter and well defined. The treble has also toned down a bit and become more refined. This really is an excellent headphone! (if not quite in the same class as the top open backs but 90% there). Very happy with the purchase.
People throw superlatives around these days like they are about to go extinct. This is true for most things; but especially true when it comes to sound reproduction and gear.
I find that in reality, delivering and consuming great sound is an exercise in compromise.
And compromise is not a bad thing. It is in the never ending friction from the push and pull between portability, cost and sound quality that truly great products are forged.
Are the T5P's the best/most awesome/brilliant/amazing sounding headphones ever?
The answer is no.
But are they the best headphones for me at this moment? Yes!
These headphones, when matched with the Chord Mojo, churn out sound that is huge, detailed and most importantly enjoyable. It wraps you up and makes the music feel alive and immediate.
Talk about resolution, timbre and separation is only relevant when you are comparing things within similar parameters of cost, quality and segment.
If you are looking for a reasonably portable, highly resolving and spectacular sounding closed back headphones at this price point- I don't believe there is anything quite like it.
They are comfortable to wear for hours at end. After a while you forget that you have them on. They benefit hugely from a good DAC but also sound great right out of my MacBook Pro.
Great build quality with five years warranty. This points to great confidence on the part of the manufacturer.
The T5P's are very precise- both in sound and design. Unlike many products in the market today, they know exactly what they are made for. They have a strong sense of purpose.
If you know exactly what you want out your headphones and if that happens to be the purpose and design of the T5p's- you will love them
