Shanling with the M3 Ultra has introduced dedicated headphone amplifiers in its circuitry. At the heart of amplification lies a pair of Ricore RT6863 headphone amplifiers. IDEAL SOUND PROCESSING WITH FPGA & KDS CRYSTAL OSCILLATORS

The Shanling M3 Ultra has fully balanced circuitry. It includes four premium ELNA capacitors. The Four 47μF Japanese SILMIC II capacitors represent a crucial part of the audio circuit, playing a role in the new sound tuning of the M3 Ultra. This design represents their unique sound characteristics, making the sound warmer, smoother and more natural. The M3 Ultra also features in-House Developed FPGA & KDS Crystal Oscillators. Shanling's self-developed FPGA with two low-phase noise 45MHz / 49MHz active oscillators, pushing phase noise to low levels and assuring constant ideal sound processing. The circuitry also features DC-DC voltage regulators to maximise power output and improve power stability.

Warm side of Saber DAPs

BUILD QUALITY - no major complaints, except that volume wheel is slightly mushy and loose, has tactile feel but very slight movements can accidentally change volume. Also should have had a separate power button instead of combining it with volume the mushy feel does not inspire confidence when pressing it for lock/unlocks. Jacks on top is completely user prefrence, i like it top makes cable management easier when connecting it with PC and when lying down. SD Card flap is fragile so need to handle with care.

SOFTWARE - everything works as it should as in stock android, one annoying thing is that they removed the option to swap navigation buttons in 3 button layout and also removed the home bar accent for guesture controls so accidental triggers for back and recents when scrolling from bottom in some apps do happen often, should have allowed users to adjust back guesture padding and sensitivity in such a small screen. overall just stick to guestures for navigation. Don't have complaints with the launcher it just does its job. one more omission is battery saver mode of android, would have helped battery life. All modern streaming apps work without RESAMPLING. tried Tidal and Qobuz as well, works without any issues, further the LED indicates correct Samplerates in all scenarios in streaming as well as in USB mode, NO UPSCALLING. few things i miss are systemwide EQ (although its rare for all DAPs except HiBys') and overcharge or battery protection, maintaing battery % automatically when plugged in. no freezes and lags thanks to SnapDragon 665 but avoid opening more than 3-4 apps in background due to lack of RAM.

BATTERY - Battery life in Balanced mode is upto 9-10 hrs if in high gain and adequate volume of 45-50% similarly in dual dac mode in 3.5mm its 10-12 hrs, but in single dac mode and low gain its almost 15-18hrs sometimes 20 but not always. personally i just run it in single dac mode in 3.5mm when travelling or when not doing any critical listening and When at home or near a Power Source just switch to balanced mode. For moderate to Above average gear there is enough power to run them at good volumes, if there are harder to Drive Stuff, move to higher budget segment DAPS instead.

SOUND - Slightly warm instead of neutral like other DAPS. It was intended as such in its implentation. Sound has a lot of Weight and Body. Bass is really well implemented good control and speed and plenty more than other DAPS. Midrange is nice not too forward but not recessed either, vocals are clear and accurate, but slightly held back in very upper midrange to not make it shouty. Treble is Good but does not have that high upper treble presence, lacks that airy detail and space. Soundstage is more or less dependent on the Gear thats plugged in, it just opens up sound stage for all equipment but its contributions are diminishing for highend equipments. Sounds best in balanced output.

CONCLUSION - If you are looking for DAPS in this budget price segment, whats more important is its useability and gear pairing. in terms of useability i would say since its android 10, its not going to go obsolete for apps anytime soon, also below this price segment things like tempotec V6 or Sony DAPS have a lot of minor compromises which add up overtime. Its only competitors are HiBy R6 (Gen 3), Fiio M11s and Ibasso DX170. All of them more expensive than this by 4-6k. However if you own a lot of bright gear or you want some sub bass in your listening experience, this is the only one of them thats going to sound the most appropiate to that aspect. It Paired Really well with my Moondrop Kato. Also Tried the 7Hz Timeless and DT1990 on them and the pairing goes really well together.

Perfect ergonomic design. Comfortable to handle. Strong build quality.
Sound quality is great and detailed one, using both IEM(I am using NOBLE AUDIO IEM - Kumble Khan) also works great with Blue Tooth audio RHA TRUCONNECT2.
Downloading TIDAL App(Thanks to Mr.IAN PEREIRA for downloading it) and It sounds great and enjoy both MQA and other HIGH RES and other formats.
Internal device storage at this price range is okay. External storage of up to 2 TB is enormous.
The screen looks beautiful and bright and the screen size is good enough for typing and other tasks. The SHANLING inbuilt player also the interface works smoothly with out lagging.
This DAP is great at this mid range level price point.
I am not able to get a case for it because it is smooth to hold and slippery. Portable and pocketable.
