DESCRIPTION

The Topping Audio D90 is a fully-balanced high-end DAC/Amp. It uses the flagship AKM AK4499 DAC chip that supports playback up to DSD512 and 32-bit/768kHz. Bluetooth v5.0 and advanced audio codecs like LDAC, aptX HD, aptX & more allow for hi-res audio transmission even wirelessly.

MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) is a British technology that consists of high-quality audio data, like the original master recording. MQA 'folds' this audio data into a small file that can be easily streamed/downloaded. The D90 MQA has a full MQA decoder that can 'unfold' this file presenting all the details in the audio recording.(Note: MQA support is only available for the D90 MQA variant. The standard variant does not support MQA decoding.)

Thanks to CPLD, the D90 effectively reduces jitters. CPLD focuses on the clock processing and signal optimisation. It works in combination with the accusilicon femtosecond to coordinate the processing of the digital signal optimisation to ultimately improve the stability and quality of the signal. The switchable power voltage (115v for AC100-120V 50/60Hz and 230v for AC220-240V 50/60Hz) allows for global usage.

Apart from Bluetooth, the D90 supports various input options like USB, IIS (via HDMI transmission), Coaxial, Optical and AES. The USB interface uses XMOS XU216 for the MQA version and XMOS XU208 for the standard version. IIS offers DSD channel and phase settings as well as better decoding. The Coaxial, Optical and AES inputs use an AK4118 S/PDIF receiver that has the lowest jitter. Thanks to its full-balanced nature, you can use the single-ended and balanced output at the same time.

Need a Bluetooth DAC, standalone DAC or even a pre-amp + DAC? The D90 is at your service. Simply connect it to any Bluetooth-enabled source device to turn it into a Bluetooth DAC. In Pure DAC mode, you can keep the max output to 4Vrms (Balanced XLR) and 2Vrms (Single-Ended RCA). As a pre-amp, the nifty little remote lets you adjust the volume from -99dB to 0dB when you directly connect it to any active speaker or power-amp.

A great investment for audio

I was a bit sceptical if this was the DAC to go for or should I rather invest in a R2R dac or maybe go up the price range and look at the ones from Mytek, Matrix Audio. I have spent countless nights going through various forums, reviews, videos. You name it and I read it. I have an existing Topping DX3 Pro, that was working well till I was using the Presonus Eris 3.5 monitors. However as time progresses you want to upgrade.
With the addition of headphones and bigger better monitor speakers it was time to upgrade. I finally hit the bullet and went with Topping D90. I like clean, clear and reference sound, and this one fills the bill perfectly.
The change over topping DX3 is drastic and I for once agree with most of the reviews. This has changed the sound game for me entirely. With great controlled bass, to good mids and sparkling highs, this gives a dynamism to the sound and a soundstage that is just the ide enough for you to enjoy. I did not feel this colored the sound in any way and that is exactly what a DAC is meant to do. It is a great purchase and now I am waiting for the A90 to come back in stock so I can complete my stack.
