The SR225x has been upgraded and comes with the 4th generation of Grado dynamic drivers with a frequency response of 20 - 22,000 Hz, precision-made housing, F cushion, an 8-conductor cable and a new headband for a comfortable wearing experience. These are serious pair of headphones. Amazing vocals and highs, tight bass. Actually the best vocals i have ever heard. Good for 1-2 hrs of listening. (Not the most comfortable pairs). Airy and nice wide sound stage.
The stock L pads seem to tone down the ‘standard’ Grado bright sound to a slightly punchier low end and smoother mids/highs. I upgraded from the SR80e, so I am used to the quite urgent sound the stock S pads produce; thankfully, I ordered spare S pads so I can actually test and feel the upgrade of the drivers.
The braided finish on the cables somewhat assures me that they will not fray or break at the joints. My SR80e have served me well, and the cable broke only after daily abuse for 4 years. Let's hope this change extends the life of the cable.
Overall, this product is definitely an upgrade over the SR80 in terms of soundstage and resolution, and listening through it using my beloved S pads guarantees that I walk away feeling the shimmering highs of contentment, and that my day is off to a happy start :)
