Silver Lining: Meze Alba 2-Pin to 4.4mm Balanced Cable on the Moondrop Chu II

There is a particular satisfaction in finding an upgrade that costs a fraction of your existing gear yet makes everything you already own sound better. The Meze Alba 2-Pin to Balanced 4.4mm Silver Plated Cable did exactly that for my Moondrop Chu II setup — and it did it in a way that felt less like adding something new and more like finally hearing what was already there.

Some context first. The Moondrop Chu II paired with the DAWN PRO 2 is already one of the most coherent setups in my collection — both products share Moondrop's Harman-neutral tuning philosophy, both are engineered with a precision that belies their price, and together they present a tonal consistency that feels intentional rather than coincidental. I was genuinely happy with this pairing before the cable arrived. That matters — because what the Meze Alba cable changed was not the fundamental character of the setup. It elevated what was already working rather than correcting something that wasn't.

The cable itself is beautifully made. Silver plated conductors, a supple and tangle-resistant jacket, and connector hardware that communicates quality at both ends. The 2-Pin connector — 0.78mm, matching the Chu II's recessed socket precisely — seats with a clean, flush fit that stock cables rarely achieve with the same confidence. There is no wobble, no micro-movement at the connection point, and the connector housing is slim enough to sit properly inside the Chu II's recessed socket without any fitment awkwardness. On the DAC end, the 4.4mm Pentaconn termination connects to the DAWN PRO 2's balanced output with the same solidity. The entire assembled chain feels like it was designed as one piece rather than assembled from separate components.

Moving to balanced operation through the DAWN PRO 2 is where the Chu II genuinely transforms. The DAWN PRO 2 is capable of approximately 240mW through its 4.4mm balanced output compared to around 60mW single-ended — that is a fourfold increase in available power, and while the Chu II's high sensitivity means it never needed more volume, what that additional headroom provides is control and authority rather than loudness. The bass tightens in a way that is immediately noticeable — the Chu II's low end, already well-controlled on the stock cable, gains a definition and texture that makes bass lines feel more purposeful and less like a supporting character. Kick drums have a snap to them that the single-ended connection simply doesn't deliver with the same precision.

The midrange — the Chu II's strongest suit — benefits in a different and arguably more significant way. Balanced operation eliminates the shared ground path between left and right channels, and the result is a channel separation and stereo imaging improvement that is not subtle. Instruments that previously occupied the same approximate space in the soundstage now have their own distinct positions. Vocals sit more centred and more three-dimensional — there is a sense of the vocalist occupying a specific point in space rather than being spread across the front of the presentation. For a Harman-neutral IEM whose core strength is accurate midrange reproduction, this improvement in imaging precision is meaningful.

The silver plated conductors contribute a slight lift in treble clarity and extension that complements the Chu II's character without pushing it into brightness. The Chu II is not a dark or rolled-off IEM by any measure, but through the Meze cable there is an additional airiness to the upper frequencies — cymbals decay more naturally, the space around acoustic instruments feels more believable, and the overall presentation gains a sense of openness that the stock cable doesn't quite reach.

What this cable has done to the Moondrop setup as a whole is give it a completeness that I didn't realise it was missing. The Chu II and DAWN PRO 2 were already a coherent pairing — the Meze Alba cable makes them feel like a finished, considered system. The investment is proportional, the improvement is real, and the visual upgrade of a well-built silver cable replacing a stock cable is a genuinely pleasant addition to an already satisfying setup.

If you own the Chu II and DAWN PRO 2 and haven't yet moved to balanced operation — this cable is the most direct and effective way to do it.
