Planar Magnetic Drivers

Planar magnetic drivers combine characteristics of several driver types. They employ magnetic fields akin to dynamic and balanced armature drivers. However, planar magnetic drivers, like electrostatic drivers, use a flat, thin diaphragm in contrast to a coil. The planar drivers are known for their quick transient response.

Closed-Back Design

Headphones with a Closed-Back design are completely sealed around the ear cup, allowing the sound to travel directly into your ears. This means that closed-back headphones block out outside noise, giving much better isolation, and minimising sound leakage to those around you.

Needs Amplification

Headphones and IEMs require a certain level of power to sound their best and work at their full potential. When your headphones or IEMs are underpowered, they can sound thin or muffled.

Amplifiers are required to provide adequate power to your headphone or IEMs to perform at their best. Simply put, amplifiers allow a weak audio signal to be boosted to a powerful one.

To put it into perspective, devices such as your phones and laptops come with an amplifier, but they offer very limited output power. This output may not be sufficient to power headphones and IEMs to shine at their best. This is where a dedicated amplifier is required to deliver adequate power to hear your music in all its glory.

Stealth is a result of careful designing and engineering delivering unmatched performance and ergonomics. Featuring the latest innovations from the company, including improved drivers, acoustic tuning and a self-adjusting headband. Stealth features a closed-back design offering exceptional isolation and a wide soundstage, allowing you to enjoy your music in life-like quality.

The team at Dan Clark Audio spent four years developing the newly featured drivers in the Stealth. These headphones feature an all-new 4th generation planar magnetic driver delivering incredibly low distortion throughout the listening range with levels of detail only found in the top of the line headphones. Stealth's 4th-generation drivers deliver an amazing balance of intricacy, nuance and grit that will have you reaching for all your favourite recordings. The driver uses DCA's patented v-Planar technology to reduce total harmonic distortion and improve low-frequency extension.

Every headphone is subject to the issue of high-frequency standing waves making the treble sound harsh, fatiguing and synthetic. To solve this, the team at Dan Clark Audio developed a new tuning system called AMTS. AMTS is a patent-pending inline device placed between the transducer and ear. What it does is integrates waveguides, diffusion control, quarter-wave and Helmholtz resonators into one compact structure. Diffusion reduces some standing wave formation, while resonators act as both precision and broad filters to smooth and shape the frequency response. AMTS renders high frequencies with a refreshingly smooth, accurate, and detailed delivery across all genres. Further added to this, the diaphragm is made on an all-new system for a more uniform and consistent tension, lower distortion, and better matching.

Comfort is an essential factor when it comes to headphone design. If they are not comfortable to wear, the design is flawed. The designers at Dan Clark Audio understood this concept and employed radical design choices in the Stealth headphones. These headphones feature ultra-soft ear pads and weigh just 415g, making them one of the lightest premium headphones. The earpads are made of vegan suede and leather, offering self-adjusting suspension. For easy storage and transportation, the Stealth has been equipped with an elegant folding gimbal, allowing it to fold into a compact case that's small and easy to pack.

Dan Clark Audio’s design goal is to never compromise on sound, comfort, or aesthetics and this is reflected very well in the Stealth headphones. Stealth is designed and built by hand in San Diego, California, and is backed by quality and support you can count on. The headphone takes its design cues from the stealth aircraft and is refined to levels you would expect in the finest of luxury cars. The ear cups are made of carbon/aluminium bonded material, while the body uses titanium. The Stealth also features NiTiNol (nickel and titanium) headband wires, but the two wires are in a more open, "flying" design rather than strictly parallel. The leather headband's fine red stitching creates a quilted head-strap that’s not only gorgeous but is also functional and comfortable and the headband strap itself is designed differently. Instead of adjusting with ratchets or mechanical sliders, the headband features a "self-adjusting suspension system." It's on an elastic that allows it to easily fit without needing manual adjustment.

Regions of the frequency spectrum

SUB BASS
(20Hz - 80 Hz)

The first section of the frequency spectrum is the sub-bass. Everything below 80Hz is sub-bass, so generally, you need a subwoofer or a good pair of headphones (open-back headphones, for example) to hear this region. This region comprises instruments like the Kick Drum and the Bass Guitar. You should be able to hear Sub-Bass if you’re listening on monitors or headphones. But if you’re listening on a laptop or a phone, there’s no way you will hear that.

MID BASS
(80 Hz - 300 kHz)

After the Sub-Bass region, we get into the region known as the Bass or Mid-Bass. This region consists of everything between 80 and 300 hertz. In this area, we’ve got instruments like bass guitar and the low end of a snare. Lots of the low-end vocals as well, because male vocals are going to have the fundamental below 200Hz in most cases.

LOWER MIDRANGE
(300 Hz - 1000 kHz)

Next, if you go from 300 Hz up to 1000 kHz, this is known as the Lower Midrange, and this is a crucial region for music because this is where you get a lot of buildup with guitars, vocals, and even the top-end of the bass guitar especially. Lower Midrange is an area guilty of adding mud to a mix and clarity in this region lifts a track exponentially.

UPPER MIDRANGE
(1 kHz - 6 kHz)

Human hearing focuses inherently on this frequency range. So it’s crucial to get this range right. This region consists of the main focus of the track (e.g. vocals) and synths. Be aware that this is also where you can start to get into harshness and aggressive tones.

TREBLE
(6 kHz - 10 kHz)

After the Upper Midrange, we’ve got the Treble region between 6kHz and 8 kHz, and this is where things start to get harsh. This region is where we have brittleness from instruments like the Hi-Hats and Cymbals. This is also a crucial range for clarity and aggression, especially for female vocals.

AIR
(10 kHz - 20 kHz)

At the end of the frequency spectrum, we get to the Air region or the Top End. This region consists of everything above 10 kHz. This is where we have air and this is where we get a sense of shine and sparkle in our music.
