I've been in the market for a premium pair of headphones that focuses more on the sound rather than on ANC performance. My considerations were the Bose QC35 II and the Sony 1000XM3/4, same as most people looking to buy headphones in this price segment. The Sony headphones focused more on bass which muddled the sound while the Bose were not very feature rich. By chance I stumbled on the Shure Aonic 50 and from there on its newer iteration, the Aonic 40. These cans look great and reviews for the headphone praised the sound quality. After about a month of use, I think I'm ready to finally review my Aonic 40 (sorry Headphone Zone team, but I couldn't review the headphones after just a week with them).
Design and Comfort: 7/10
Most reviews online will say that the Aonic 40 is a comfortable headphone and this is true to an extent. The earcups are very good quality and feel more premium than the Sony and Bose. Even in the Delhi heat, I had very minimal sweat form around my ears and my ears never got hot while using the headphone. The construction is mostly plastic but very high quality with no creaks as of now. The design is definitely at par with the Sony with a very understated design and physical buttons that are not clicky but tactile. My 7 rating is because of how these headphones cause some pain on the top of my head after 45-60 minutes of use. This is an issue specific to me as I have hit my head multiple times in that area, making it sensitive. With that said, I feel the headband should have been given better foam padding rather than a squishy rubber to increase the comfort. Other people who have used my headphones did not complain about comfort, so this is something that will vary between people.
Sound Quality: 9/10
From the factory, the Aonic 40 comes with a flat tuning. After ears with bass-tuned earphones and headphones, this was very refreshing for me. I could hear instruments in my favourite songs that I didn't notice before. However, after about a day of flat music, I wanted some fun in my music, with more clarity in the vocals and more thump in the bass. This is where the very good Shure app comes in with its equalizer. The app comes with some presets and I settled with a combination of bass and vocal boost EQ. What's great about this EQ is that you can tune the headphones to a sound that you prefer. If I wanted I could tune these to be exactly the same as the Sony or Bose and this kind of versatility is missing from those other headphones. My current EQ (attached in images) lets me enjoy the bass while not interfering with the other frequencies and retaining clarity. This is the biggest reason I'm keeping these headphones despite the comfort issues I have.
I will be unbiased here and say that the ANC on these headphones are not the greatest in this segment. If you want good ANC headphones, the Bose and the Sony should be your priority. The headphones can cut out a lot of white noise but not as much as its competition and it definitely does not cut out voices too much. I see ANC as a good to have feature but not essential, so I am happy with what is provided by the Aonic 40. One thing to note with the ANC on this headphone is that you will experience cabin pressure while using it. This is because of how the earcups create the seal and how the ANC just cuts out a lot of white noise. Again since this is not a necessary feature for me, I have kept the headphones on Ambient mode to avoid giving myself a headache and this has worked very well for me.
If you want a good pair of headphones that you can tune to your exact taste, the Aonic 40 is the perfect pair for you. It handles music and movies extremely well. It's very comfortable on the ears. And lastly, it is the only pair of headphones in the market that is the perfect middle ground between the Sony and the Bose.
Thank you so much for such a detailed and well written feedback on this product, this makes us really happy and it'll be really helpful to all the other customers to make the right choice.
The Shure Aonic 40 is an incredible Bluetooth headphone which ticks all the check boxes Its immersive sound quality along with a comfort fit makes it a major contender for serious listening.
Extremely happy with the buy. The only con is the ANC, which I would above average but gets heavily beaten by the likes of Sony 1000MX4 and Airpod Max. But the sound resolution and soundstage feels better than both.
