In case you receive the STAX - SRS-X1000 with a manufacturing defect, please raise a return request within 7 days of delivery.

However, if you receive an incorrect / damaged / different product or one with missing accessories, please raise a return request within 24 hours of delivery. In case you receive a product with a missing, incorrect, or faulty accessory, you will be given a replacement accessory instead of the entire product.

Please make sure that the product is in the original packaging with all the accessories it came with. We'll also need an unboxing video and images of the parcel to investigate about the discrepancy. You may be asked to share images of the product and the packaging received for us to determine the damage or defect prior to approving the return request. The free replacement will be shipped only once the original order is returned.

A replacement will be issued only if:

- It is found to be defective
- It is determined that the product was not damaged while in your possession
- The product is not different from what was shipped to you

Japanese Electrostatic Pioneers From 1938

Stax, founded in 1938, is a Japanese company that makes high-end audio equipment. Twenty-two years later, in 1960, Stax released their first electrostatic earspeaker, the Stax SR-1. Over the following thirty-six years, Stax produced a variety of amplification, earspeaker, tonearm, CD player, DAC, phono cartridge and loudspeaker products.

Stax is best known for its electrostatic and electret headphones, which they call earspeakers. Electrostatic headphones work similarly to electrostatic loudspeakers but on a smaller scale. In 1995, fifty-seven years after the company’s foundation, it became insolvent. The company was revived in 1996 as the new STAX company. In December 2011, Chinese loudspeaker manufacturer Edifier announced the acquisition of 100% equity in Stax.

Mind melting

My first STAX setup. Brilliantly detailed and natural sound. Can be slightly bright in the highs. The headphones (or earphones) are very light weight and comfortable. Headband doesn't have any cushioning and adjusting it is a bit cumbersome. For medium sized ears, the seal is good and cups envelope the ears. For large ear size, might be more on ear but shouldn't be uncomfortable as the clamp force is light.
Thoroughly enjoying the electrostat experience. [Owning HD600 and Edition XS previously]. Setup used: DAP -> 3.5mm to RCA-> Energizer 270S -> Stax SR-X1

Few things to consider
1. The earphone unit comes across as delicate so have to be careful in handling it. Better to purchase a case to keep dust out as there’s no pouch or case included.
2. Bass is decent but similar to or bit less than planars and nowhere close to dynamic drivers so if a basshead then may find lacking in punch.
3. Sometimes the high level of details could be distracting or if song is not well recorded, it will not be enjoyable as the earphones are very transparent.
4. There's a crackle/crincle sound sometimes if the cups move while listening [turning the head or adjusting the cups]. Something new for me coming from planars and dd.
5. Energizer + earphones needed so can't use earphones without buying energizer. [This is combo unit so getting both]. Bundled cable is good but too long.

These are my first electrostats. I had tried electrostatic headphones at Headphone Connect and while those remain out of my means still, this unit appealed to me because of the price including the Driver.

I only had to get the 3.5 mm to split RCA cable since the input on the driver unit are RCA only.

The input to the energizer was my phone through Hip DAC 3. The setup can get pretty messy since there are several interconnections and considering the length of cables involved, but post the hassle of setting it up the experience is indeed rewarding.

The SR-X1 sounds beautiful. All apprehensions regarding the timbre vanished within a few minutes of listening. Instrument separation and clarity of the output is top notch. I didn’t think the staging was very wide. The imaging seemed to be the standard 3 blobs of sound, will have to ascertain by listening to more songs.

Overall the sound is slightly on the brighter side without being tiring in the couple of hours that I spent listening. Bass isn’t lacking, but the sound isn’t bass heavy. Vocals are handled well and the highs though clear were not piercing or sibilant. “Busy” sections is songs are handled well.

There are obviously a few cons starting with the build and even here are no complaints about any component apart from the headphone itself which seemed flimsy with the positive of detachable cables. You’ll have to baby them and get a proper case to store considering sensitivity to dust and moisture. On the flip side the headphones are light and the cups are comfortable since the headband doesn’t clamp tightly at all.

Second is the setup which involves a lot of cables as mentioned earlier which can be a kind of a deterrent to getting these out in the first place.

Inspite of the concerns regarding the build, the SRS-X1000 bundle comes across as an honest attempt from Stax to make these headphones more accessible.

Lastly, delivery from the HPZ was on time and headphones were received in pristine condition.
