Moondrop FreeDSP PRO is a pretty niche product. It’s clearly aimed at people who want their DAC/amp and cable to be one single unit, instead of carrying around a separate dongle. It’s basically the successor to the original Moondrop FreeDSP cable, which had its own ups and downs — and is still about three times cheaper.
I’ve been using the FreeDSP PRO with my Moondrop Blessing 2, which comes with a very lean stock cable and also benefits quite a bit from EQ, so this pairing made sense for me.
What I like:
1. The cable itself feels well made. The USB-C connector in particular looks solid and doesn’t feel fragile at all. Overall, it gives off a premium vibe.
2. Packaging is nice, and the included pouch is actually useful, especially if you travel.
3. The DAC performance is solid. It drives the Blessing 2 without any issues and sounds clean and controlled.
4. The web-based tuning tool is excellent. This is honestly one of the biggest strengths. The EQ is precise, you can upload your own FR, apply a target curve, and save presets. If you enjoy tuning, this part is genuinely fun to use.
What I don’t like:
1. The cloth-sheathed cable is quite microphonic. You can clearly hear rubbing and movement noise when no music is playing, which can be annoying. Once music starts, it mostly disappears, but it’s still there.
2. The Moondrop Link app is still unreliable. Firmware updates can be buggy and unpredictable. I’ve had a much better experience just using the web-based EQ tool instead.
3. Battery drain is noticeable, and the unit can get warm during use. This might be partly due to the app misbehaving, so I’ll need more time to be sure.
4. Price is the biggest downside for me. Considering the original FreeDSP cable costs around ₹3k, has better cable material, and even includes mic support, the DSP PRO feels expensive for what it adds.
Who this makes sense for:
1. People who want a clean, all-in-one DAC + cable solution.
2. Anyone who enjoys EQ and experimenting with tuning.
Who should probably skip it:
1. If you’re a plug-and-play listener, this isn’t for you.
2. If you just want a better cable, there are cheaper and more sensible options.
Overall, the FreeDSP PRO isn’t a bad product — it’s just very specific. If EQ is a big part of how you enjoy your IEMs, it can be worth it. Otherwise, the original FreeDSP or a regular dongle DAC probably makes more sense.
