Sets a New Benchmark For an Ultra-Portable DAC & Amp
Cayin is committed to creating the best audio gear and distributing Hi-Fi products. Cayin's audio devices have distinct cultural overtones and fall within a broad pricing range. One such product that was well ahead of its time, the RU6, now gets an upgrade in the form of RU7. It is a USB-powered ultra-portable 1-Bit Resistive Ladder DAC and amplifier.

Cayin designed a micro-miniaturized 1-Bit DAC circuit from discrete components to convert digital signal to analogue signal through a fully differentiated 4-ch DAC architecture. A resistor network composed of 128 pieces (4 x 32) of high-precision thin film resistors makes up the 1-Bit DAC circuit. Cayin's well-liked N7 Digital Audio Player has the same design architecture. After going through a 3-level active LPF, the resistor network's output will be changed to a single-ended signal for volume adjustment.

After going through a 3-level active LPF, the resistor network's output will be changed to a single-ended signal for volume adjustment.

It has excellent digital audio capabilities with user-selectable All-to-DSD available with the Cayin RU7. It supports native DSD from DSD64 to DSD256 (Direct Stream Digital) and PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) up to 384kHz. Its Audio Bridge will receive various audio formats and undergo highly accurate signal amplification. Before being fed to the discrete 1-Bit DAC circuit, all-digital audio signals are converted to the specified DSD format (DSD64, DSD128 or DSD256).

Cayin has designed the amplification circuitry with dual amplifiers in parallel, providing 4-CH high power Balanced driven output. The second phone amplifier is a parallel unity gain inverting phase amplifier. You get an impressive upgrade in phone output power with 3.5mm SE, 160mW @32 Ohms, 4.4mm BAL, 400mW @32 Ohms.

The shared line-out function will configure the 3.5mm or 4.4mm phone output into fixed voltage output (bypassing volume control): 3.5mm SE, 160mW @32 Ohms, 4.4mm BAL, 400mW @32 Ohms. The line out voltage is carefully selected to retain as much detail and dynamic of the 1-Bit DAC with minimum noise and distortion. This functionality enables you to connect the RU7 to a portable/desktop amplifier or home audio system and use it as a miniature 1-Bit DAC.

Discrete Resistor Network DAC circuit is very demanding on incoming data integrity Cayin recommends keeping the digital volume of mobile phones at maximum output to safeguard the quality of the digital audio signal. Cayin has developed its discrete resistor network volume control with 100 steps volume control. This design is done through 3 segments of resistors and switching relays, offering precise control over a volume range, satisfying even the need of the most sensitive IEM users. The segment ranges from Segment 1: 1-49, Segment 2: 50-79, and Segment 3: 80-100.

RU7's circuitry is split into dual 6-layer PCB, with digital and analogue circuits installed in separate boards to minimise interference. This design architecture safeguards signal integrity, making sure the noise from the reference clock and DSP will not bleed into the amplification circuit.

A discrete resistor network is a low-power DAC circuit when compared to other highly integrated DAC chipsets, minimises power drain from a mobile source. Redesigned amplification circuit increases output power dramatically while maintaining the overall power drain at 100-110mA. Low power consumption allows RU7 to be compatible with the following digital audio sources: Android-based mobile devices, iOS and iPad OS mobile devices, macOS computers, Windows 7/8/8.1/10 computers, and Digital Audio Players with USB Audio output.

All surfaces are smoothly curved to enhance the look and feel of the RU7. The small and lighter chamfering is done for better handling. The 128*64 pixel OLED screen displays playback information with good visibility displaying all relevant information. The hardware volume button conveniently controls volume and acts as a menu selection button when entering the mode setting.

Discrete 1-Bit DAC architecture is typically found on heavy-duty setups. RU7 packs all these in a compact form factor and has seen improvements when compared to its predecessor, the RU6. It's an incredible DAC if you are someone who prefers pure analogue sound.

The additional balanced output power, the technical capability, and several All-To-DSD modes are just some of the key features that elevate and differentiate the RU7 from its peers and the competition.
The Cayin RU7 has a tuning which is more to the neutral side, but with its full body and powerful, controlled bass impact, it is a very musical and engaging DAC/AMP dongle. Cayin has certainly set the bar very high.
With a smooth, rich and musical tonality, RU7 is also the most versatile dongle I've used with the selection of high-end IEMs in my collection. Highly recommended.
With these additional features, extra power, and excellent sound quality, a dongle like RU7 can be a real competitor to most of the entry level and some mid-fi level DAPs.
Having listened to at least 40 with a wide range of IEMs and headphones over the past 4 years, the Cayin RU7 makes a very strong case for itself and especially at its asking price.
Cayin’s RU7 continues the company’s hot streak of breaking new ground in DAC design for the dongle format, the all-new 1-bit DAC in the RU7 is even more impressive than the R2R DAC in its predecessor.

How does a DAC make a difference to the sound?
Our smartphones have become our default source of music. The only problem here is they are very convenient for music listening, but smartphones aren't made to sound great. A digital-to-analogue converter or DAC chip converts digital music files to an analogue signal output from your phone. All phones, laptops, and really any device with a 3.5mm output would have an inbuilt DAC. Unfortunately, most smartphone DACs are woefully inadequate in giving you a good-quality sound output. A dedicated portable DAC is a powerful device that connects to your smartphone through Bluetooth, USB-C, or Lightning cable and bypasses the phone's built-in DAC. The DAC can decode high-resolution audio up to the highest formats and can have a profound effect on the sound, making your listening experience on your headphones more engaging.
Do I really need a DAC for my Headphones or IEMs?
Most smartphones and laptops with a 3.5mm output would have an inbuilt DAC. But they usually sound basic and can make listening to music on nice pair of headphones boring. They are also, simply put, not capable of playing high-resolution audio formats. A dedicated DAC will decode the audio format you are listening to, reproducing minute details accurately to be played back on your headphones or speakers. Good DACs can make music sound more detailed, lifelike and accurate, even if you may be streaming music over Spotify or other streaming services. If you pair your headphones with a decent DAC, you'll get the finest results from a high-resolution streaming service like Apple Music or Tidal. Using a dedicated DAC is a great way to start if you have high-quality headphones and want them to sound their best.
How do I connect a DAC to my smartphone or laptop?
If you're using an Android phone,
Android phones usually offer a Type-C port for charging and data transmission. DACs in general come with USB Type-C male connectors, which can be paired easily to your smartphone.
If you're using an iOS device with a lightning port,
iOS devices like Apple smartphones have a Lightning port for charging and data transmission. DAC manufacturers in general provide a Lightning cable or a Lightning connector, which terminates to female Type-C. If not, it is simple to buy the connector or the Type-C to lightning cable separately.
If you're using a Laptop with Windows
Laptops have a USB-A port, and DACs feature Type-C to USB-A connectors that make it easy to connect the two devices. For some DACs to function flawlessly, drivers may need to be installed.
If you're using a Mac,
A Mac usually has a USB-A port, and DACs feature Type-C to USB-A connectors/cables that make it easy to connect the two devices. For some DACs to function flawlessly, drivers may need to be installed.
If your DAC supports Bluetooth,
Some DACs also support Bluetooth, so you may stream music wirelessly while listening to music by simply pairing your phone with the DAC and connecting your preferred earphones or IEMs.
Moreover, Bluetooth DACs offer app support, giving you access to a variety of filters, EQ settings, and much more.
Will this DAC & Amp be able to drive my Headphones or IEMs?
The Cayin RU7 DAC & Amp is a portable DAC ideally meant to be used along with IEMs when listening to music on the go or with easy-to-drive headphones.
In general, these are not the best suited to use along with high-impedance headphones or full-sized open-back headphones, and we’d recommend getting something with a higher output power, like a dedicated desktop amplifier.
What difference will the 4.4mm or 2.5mm balanced output make to the sound?
Portable DACs usually give you a simple 3.5mm single-ended output wherein you can plug your IEMs into them. But nicer DACs also feature a Balanced output, usually through a 2.5mm or 4.4mm port. IEM manufacturers have started including Balanced cables with a 2.5mm or 4.4mm plug to take advantage of the balanced output. And several upgrade cables are now available for virtually all IEMs having detachable cables that also feature the 2.5mm or 4.4mm plugs.
A balanced output on your DAC, in general, minimises crosstalk between the left and the right channel and can make your music sound open with added depth and layering. It also offers more power and less distortion at higher volumes and can make the bass sound tighter and more deliberate.
What is the warranty period on the Cayin RU7 and how do I claim warranty?
