It has a truthful and neutral presentation with great decay and transparency. It’s not too hard to drive, and it certainly has what it takes in terms of being a reference headphone for the price.
The HIFIMAN Edition XS has a large soundstage, precise placement, and imaging. An almost true tonality only rivaled by its much higher tier cousins plus the bass has finally arrived at the HIFIMAN house sound signature.
The XS are an amazing value and offer performance not far off from headphones more than twice their cost. These will be a mind-blowing revelation for enthusiasts and music lovers who have only heard standard big-brand headphones.
The crisp details of the XS extend well into the treble, offering a top layer of shine over the sound signature. With the decreased in price coming along with these improvment.
It is pretty light on the head and very comfy. They completely swallow your ears, which also means a good seal, but not too much pressure on the temples.
he sound is exactly what you would expect from HiFiMAN headphones: it has very good bass presence and depth, but an overall neutral-bright tonality that goes well with many different genres.

Before buying these planars, I was enjoying the bliss that the Stax generate..thanks to Raghav's advise! I read the excellent review of the Edition XSs here are well as other media and decided to try these out.
These are mighty powerful and punchy, can be driven well even by my MacBook Air. But the first emotion they generated in me was the separation.. let's say of the instruments in a concert.. one can easily distinctly identify the location on the stage where the sound is emanating from. These cans thus create a great soundstage around you. The details one can notice in the music are astonishing!
It's truly a pleasure to enjoy music using the Edition XS!

My setup: Edition xs, ath m40x, hd600, mojo 2, apple music lossless.
PROS: Planar magnetic is fast! Sub bass is love! First impression is so good! Not missing anything! Sound feels like playing outside of the head unlike my previous two headphones Ath m40x and hd600 which sounds like coming from within the head, however the hype about ultra wide soundstage is overrated in my experience so far. Soundstage depends a lot on how the music is produced, if it is meant to be narrow sounding then it will sound narrow.
Vocals sound good, but hd600 is definitely better.
High frequencies >10k are well present which is great in m40x but suppressed in hd600.
Mid bass is flat in edition xs where hd600 is slightly better, thats why vocals sound better in hd600 but little thin in edition xs.
Subbass is pure bliss in edition xs!
Instrument separation is brilliant.
Overall, edition xs gives an allround brilliant performance, best all-rounder I have heard so far! I always missed something in previous two headphones which I am not feeling in case of edition xs. Very nice laid back sound suitable for long duration listening.
CONS: Slightly bright which might cause fatigue over time. Small EQ adjustment is may be preferred by someone who doesnot like treble. Clamp force around the ear is perfect and very comfortable earpads! But headphone falls from my head whenever my head is not vertical.
P.S. Headphone size is bigger than I expected! Need to buy a large case for storing. Dont know how to take care of planar magnetic headphones against dust. Help and tips are appreciated!

This is my third Hifiman, and the best so far. A clear upgrade from the HE400i 2020. Presentation is tangibly more spacious and layered. Still burning in, so it's going to get even better.
All my fears of build quality were unfounded; feels quite
strong and well finished. Needs an amp.

Edition xs has Neutral Bright kind of sound signature.I am a highly treble sensitive and XS has some treble spikes.But EDITION XS sound too good and performing way above the price.
Bass is too good considering as a planar magnet.
Mids are not forward.Treble has some sparkles across the frequency range..
Soundstage is very good.As any planar magnetic headphone,Edition xs is technically brilliant.
Xs is very power hungry need a good amp to power to full potential,I use Fiio k7 to juice it.
Fit is bit of a concern.Wont fit perfectly for small headed persons.Earcup is very spacious.And build is ok.Try to never drop this.If you are not a treble sensitive person,blindly go for it.l

After using it for more than 3 months. I must say,
Edition xs is really nice sounding headphones, this is my first open back headphone, and I have to say I got what I was expecting.
These are not warm sounding headphones at all.
Sometimes the tribble sounds quite sharp but not to harsh.
I suggest pair it with any warm sounding DAP like Sony /Shanling or any tube amp.
These are quite easy to drive and I am using it with my SONY ZX507 and it sounds great.
