They are such a big step up from the Sundara, that I think it's easy to understand why. I think the XS is my favourite Hifiman from their entire lineup.
It has a truthful and neutral presentation with great decay and transparency. Itās not too hard to drive, and it certainly has what it takes in terms of being a reference headphone for the price.
The HIFIMAN Edition XS has a large soundstage, precise placement, and imaging. An almost true tonality only rivaled by its much higher tier cousins plus the bass has finally arrived at the HIFIMAN house sound signature.
The XS are an amazing value and offer performance not far off from headphones more than twice their cost. These will be a mind-blowing revelation for enthusiasts and music lovers who have only heard standard big-brand headphones.
The crisp details of the XS extend well into the treble, offering a top layer of shine over the sound signature. With the decreased in price coming along with these improvment.
It is pretty light on the head and very comfy. They completely swallow your ears, which also means a good seal, but not too much pressure on the temples.
He sound is exactly what you would expect from HiFiMAN headphones: it has very good bass presence and depth, but an overall neutral-bright tonality that goes well with many different genres.

Hifiman xs is hot in treble, it's energetic, and has the widest sound stage. It took me 2 days to get used to it's tonality. Before this I had hd599 which is known to have warmer tonality everything is rolled off with a midrange bump, it was technically inferior, and the moment I switched to xs the space opened up and everything was much more transparent.
It's a great sounding headphone overall a definite buy for people who are looking for an entry into the hobby.

I purchased these along with the Fiio KA17. These sound amazing, pretty wide soundstage, slightly V/U shaped. Quite fun to listen to all round. But the build quality and comfort is not up to mark, the plastic on the headband is quite cheap and tacky, the headphones also creak a little when I swivel the cups, and they arent comfortable. They definitely wont fit you if you have a small head, mine barely just fits. But boy do they sound amazing.
I love edition xs and was genuinely impressed with their sound quality.
Unfortunately, After around three years of normal use, the right driver failed completely.
I contacted customer support and was quoted ā¹19,999 for a driver replacement, which is difficult to justify considering the cost of the headphone itself.
The sound quality is outstanding, but durability and repair costs have left me disappointed. I expected this headphone to last much longer.
Because of this experience, I personally won't be buying HiFiMan again. For my next pair,
I'll likely choose Sennheiser, as they have a strong reputation for long-term reliability, spare parts availability, and serviceability.
If you're buying these, enjoy the incredible sound but also keep the potential long term repair costs in mind.
Great headphone..first time trying openbacks ..felt airy while listening music. Needs bit of eq as mids very slightly pushed back for my likings..but after that..i felt good where voice is near me and instruments far away(my taste). But dont get fooled by reviewers praise about soundstage as its good soundstage for a headphone..dont expect theatre or speaker like staging because i was over hyped by seeing the videos. But overall great listening experience

i would say it is the biggest upgrade I will ever go for.

I was using an AKG K361, closed back dynamic headphones with a very neutral tuning - these aren't bad headphones, they sound pretty good (had them for almost 3 years), but yeah the Edition XS is a significant improvement in resolution and imaging (how well you can pick up on smaller details of music) - also better crisper and somewhat louder base.
Is it 5 times the price to benefit value? Of course not, but it's definitely 50% to 70% better than K361 in sound quality, and only 4 times or so harder to drive - (I was bottoming out the volume knob for K361 - these almost have to go upto 50%).
The music feels crisper and more textured and much wider in my AB testing with Edition XS (also did my best to volume match them) - I also had to put in an EQ boosting 2KHZ region by 3db (also add a bit of slight base here and there), the normal sound almost has a treble sheen at higher end which was a little straining for me (the K361 has made me reliant on Harmann target a bit too much)
The comfort is worse unfortunately these weigh almost double the fullly plastic K361, with a far worse headband design and material - it's not to the point I have to take them off but does require more adjustment on my part, not sure I even have proper seal in my ears lol these extremely large headphones both in the headband and earpads, but being an open back this is mostly fine.
The attached accessories are meh, the cable is just long enough not to be annoying but you don't get a second cable either - just a 6.35mm adapter.
But yeah these are an upgrade over anything below or around 15K price range in my opinion. The build quality is comparable to K361 at 6k, but that's a pretty average build quality headphones which I had to baby - so no improvements there despite the price increase.
Just a reminder - zero noise isolation - these won't work at all in any kind of noisy environments, you need a closed back - the K361 has saved me in that aspect (I used to live near a road in my past place).

Not gonna call myself an audiophile but I always had a thing for music so I've been trying to consume it in good quality to the point my wallet allows so after owning mainly mid-fi and some hi-end audiophile headphones I did some research and went for the Hifiman Edition XS but it was out of stock online in most places. While some had them but they had listed them for 2x/3x the price with no warranty and support as well.
After contacting headphonezone a headphone guru - Archita responded to me within a day and ensured that the headphone will be in stock the very next day and guess what she kept her promise. Also I got the headphone just a day after it was shipped and I actually got it before the estimated delivery date.
Headphonezone has truly fulfilled their commitment and I'm very impressed and satisfied as I need the headphones urgently. They offer authentic hi-end audio gear from companies like Focal,Audeze,Meze,STAX,Fostex etc and also premium Amplifiers and Dacs which you won't find anywhere else in India.Original headphone cables and earpads from the brands are also available here. Many companies are using only the brand box and cheap out on the packing but Headphonezone provided a really big cardboard box in spite of the headphone having its own cardboard box so that their is no compromise on the safety during transit. They asked to make an unboxing video beforehand incase anything goes wrong but I out of excitement instantly opened the package without doing so coz I trusted them and guess what everything was perfect as I expected. My unit looks fine and sounds even better.

Coming to the headphones :-
Design and Comfort - I personally love the design and the colour combination. Many people have complained about the headband being uncomfortable during longrun. In my case it is pretty good although I wear headphones for not more than 2hrs but I do feel the weight that I'm wearing something. It doesn't disappear completely like the sennheiser hd6 series and some beyerdynamics that I have used but its not bothersome either. For my headsize I didn't need to expand the headband as the default setting worked for me and gave me a secure fit. I can slightly move around my head wearing these so the comfort is pretty good for me but not excellent.
Build Quality - Lot of negative comments about terrible Hifiman qc can be observed online almost everywhere. Due to this I refrained from buying stuff from Hifiman as people say its either a hit or miss - You may get a good pair or a bad one if you are not lucky. After receiving the headphones I ran a thorough check and concluded my pair to be absolutely perfect, no creaking sound on the headband adjustments, the earcups swivel properly so no problems are there mechanically. Also the fit and finish of the headphone including the headband, earcups and earpads feel pretty good and Not Cheap as some people said so I'm happy. This is my first Hifiman product and I believe they have significantly improved if their was issues previously. However it looks like the cable is the only part they cheaped out to potentially cut costs.
Sound - Its a dark sounding headphone with the treble being slightly less pronounced but it has pretty good extension and is very refined and smooth. If you wan't a slightly brighter heaphone with more treble then you can look at the Beyerdynamics/Akg.
Mids are very pleasant sounding and vocals are full bodied. Unlike the hd6 series the mids are not very forward and sounds pretty balanced across the entire spectrum. If your absolute focus is on the midrange quality and vocals then u may look at the sennhesier hd600/650/660s2 headphones.
Coming to the bass, I've heard lot of paise about the famous planar magnetic bass response and man its actually true. The bass not only extends really low but there is certain amount of impact and thump to my ears and the bass is slightly thicker and meaty ! I have used many dynamic driver headphones, although some beyerdynamics may be pretty good but the bass on the hifiman is undoubtedly on another level and is a clear step up in terms of fidelity, resolution and impact. For me its the best audiophile bass I've ever heard.
Soundstage is spacious and wider than most senns and beyers except for amiron home, t1.1 and akg k702, but its very enjoyable and the instrument separation is also good, only headphone which comes close is the amiron home but still the edition xs sounds better. I will do a detailed comparison with it later. Overall this headphone has a very pleasant sound signature and it does everything right technically (with a slightly more emphasis on the bass) which is a difficult task for most headphones to achieve at least in this price range, so good job Hifiman.
Note - these are my early impressions and sound is subjective so whats good for me may not be good for you. All headphones are tested on my pc - Topping D10s Dac > Aune X7s unbalanced(HighGain) > H...

My setup: Edition xs, ath m40x, hd600, mojo 2, apple music lossless.
PROS: Planar magnetic is fast! Sub bass is love! First impression is so good! Not missing anything! Sound feels like playing outside of the head unlike my previous two headphones Ath m40x and hd600 which sounds like coming from within the head, however the hype about ultra wide soundstage is overrated in my experience so far. Soundstage depends a lot on how the music is produced, if it is meant to be narrow sounding then it will sound narrow.
Vocals sound good, but hd600 is definitely better.
High frequencies >10k are well present which is great in m40x but suppressed in hd600.
Mid bass is flat in edition xs where hd600 is slightly better, thats why vocals sound better in hd600 but little thin in edition xs.
Subbass is pure bliss in edition xs!
Instrument separation is brilliant.
Overall, edition xs gives an allround brilliant performance, best all-rounder I have heard so far! I always missed something in previous two headphones which I am not feeling in case of edition xs. Very nice laid back sound suitable for long duration listening.
CONS: Slightly bright which might cause fatigue over time. Small EQ adjustment is may be preferred by someone who doesnot like treble. Clamp force around the ear is perfect and very comfortable earpads! But headphone falls from my head whenever my head is not vertical.
P.S. Headphone size is bigger than I expected! Need to buy a large case for storing. Dont know how to take care of planar magnetic headphones against dust. Help and tips are appreciated!

After using it for more than 3 months. I must say,
Edition xs is really nice sounding headphones, this is my first open back headphone, and I have to say I got what I was expecting.
These are not warm sounding headphones at all.
Sometimes the tribble sounds quite sharp but not to harsh.
I suggest pair it with any warm sounding DAP like Sony /Shanling or any tube amp.
These are quite easy to drive and I am using it with my SONY ZX507 and it sounds great.

I have been using DT770 pro for a long time mostly for studio purpose.
I thought of buying a open back headphone just for listening music with good soundstage, imaging and detailed sound, i zeroed down to Hifiman Edition XS in the end.
Pros.
1. Excellent sound stage- it's quite tall due to design and quite big planet magnetic driver.
2. Nice sound imaging.
3. Very detailed sound.
4. Timber is good enough though it could be improved.
5. I mostly listen to blues/rock/metal and XS works amazing for these genres, tried some clasical orchestral music and it sounds phenomenal too.
Cons.
Only one- Headband size is quite large and might not fit on a small head.
Music lovers just go for this lovely Hifiman Edition XS and enjoy listening music.

Though not yet broken in and only got a scope to play for few hours I am in love with what I experienced. It supposed to be more enjoyable after 50 to 100 hours playing as told by experts. I simply can't imagine what it would be but have to wait and see by myself. But, what I got out of the box I am happy and nothing to complain about. Thanks to HPZ for guiding me in this hifi music world, without you I could have easily lost path in so many options available.

Till date i had heard only ath m50 and sony anc headphones. This was completely different probably because of being open back and planar. I donāt know how to describe it in audiophile terms, but it felt great after those two headphones. First song I listened to was Hotel California Live. Just amazing, a great opening for a great headphone.
I used the BTR 5 to power them on single end. Loudest I could hear was at 50/60 volume. So, i don't think that a desktop dac/amp is compulsory. After this hefty purchase that desktop dac/amp can certainly be postponed for later. And i think that in future atleast for headphones, portable dac/amps are just more convenient.
Case in point, I hooked up a type a to type c long cable to my old gaming computer which is connected to my 4k TV. hooked up btr 5 and the edition XS. Watched last of us latest episode lounging on the couch with theatre like sound. For people who canāt use big soundbars at loud volumes for fear of the neighbours, this is gooood!!
Also, i think these open back headphones are just like airpods pros transparency mode. Felt very light on the head and due to that open nature, it felt very open? Freeing? Lack of pressure on the ears.
Few warnings
It is very big and covers my ears completely. But I think my head is small for 5ā7ā so i could barely have these hang on my head at the smallest setting with very small clamping force. So, for people with shorter/smaller heads there might be fitment issues.
Canāt be handled as carefree as other closed back DD headphones. One wrong poke or fall, i shudder to think what may happen. After all you can see light coming through the transducer. So these needs to be safely stored when not in use.
The delivery experience was fast and very good with Bludart. But nonetheless i took unboxing videos from start till the headphones were out of their boxes to save myself from courier fraud or other issues.
The best thing i can say about this headphone is that it exceeded my expectations so much or excited me so much that I wrote such a long review (at least for me) when earlier i have almost never bothered that much.
