Keeping your entire collection of Hi-Resolution music in one place is the most convenient way of carrying your music library. However, Hi-Resolution files are heavy. Most songs in a FLAC format can be about 100mb per track. So more space is always better.
Most players support both internal storage and expandable storage via an external memory card. Make sure you check both - the internal memory on players, and consider the maximum supported size of the expandable storage. The FiiO R7 is a feature-rich Digital Audio Player with streaming capabilities and much more. It combines transmitter, decoder, amp, preamp, and media playback functions into one unit. Besides numerous connections, expansion capabilities and a wide variety of operating modes, it can stream media on a gorgeous portrait screen for an extraordinary user experience.
FiiO has incorporated an ESS Sabre ES9068AS DAC chip in its circuitry for the brand-new R7. It is a Hi-Res DAC chip capable of decoding up to 384kHz/32bit PCM (Pulse Code Modulation), Native DSD256 (Direct Stream Digital), and 8X MQA decoding (Master Quality Authenticated).
FiiO has developed an optimised audio circuit design for the R7. Following the decoding stage, the signal is fed to discrete opamps under a fully balanced configuration, passing through an I/V stage, low-pass filters, and a gain stage. Then, onto the dual THX AAA 788+ (THX - Tomlinson Holman’s eXperiment/AAA (Achromatic Audio Amplifier) module that does the final bit of amplification to power your headphones.
The ESS ES9068AS decoder chipset and the 4th-gen FPGA featuring phase-locked loop clock technology and a pair of femtosecond crystal oscillators promise precise and low-jitter clock signals. Audiophile parts such as Panasonic PPS film caps, which provide improved dependability and superior sound qualities, are used in decoding circuitries.
The FiiO R7 can output more than 3W to headphones rated at 32Ω in impedance, making it among the most potent all-in-one streaming device. To cater to different gears, you can switch between 5 levels of gain settings which allows matching with sensitive IEMs or large over-ear headphones that demand ample power. At the highest gain level with 32Ω load, the R7 can output as much as 3650mW in each channel on Balanced output.
FiiO R7 features Bluetooth 5.0; supports reception of LDAC, AAC, & SBC; supports transmission of LHDC, LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC, & SBC. The FiiO R7 also supports dual-band WiFi 5G + 2.4G for faster and more stable connections. It is Roon Ready with Android 10 built-in, supporting various streaming applications like Tidal, Spotify and other streaming services. It is Roon Ready certified, allowing you to access music from a ROON CORE source such as a NAS or a computer. And if that is not enough, the R7 itself can act as a network music server thanks to being compatible with the DLNA transmission protocols. Through DLNA, on another device, you can access the music on the R7's internal storage, micro-SD cards, and even tracks on a connected external portable drive.

The R7 allows you to switch between your devices and listening modes using the control knob. You can use the R7 in PO+PRE OUT mode, wherein you can connect your powered speakers and your preferred choice of headphones at the same time. Provided outputs are RCA and XLR for connection for PRE-OUT mode.

What is FiiO R7 on the whole?
What are the various inputs/outputs like?
The front panel has 6.35mm (SE), 4-pin XLR & 4.4mm Balanced headphone outputs. The FiiO R7 gets you covered with the standard and widely used headphone outputs. The rear panel is where the magic lies. It hosts a microSD card slot which supports up to 2TB if you like to play offline files on the go. It has Single-Ended RCA and 3-pin XLR Balanced lineouts. Surprisingly it also has a USB host interface that supports external USB devices like decoders, hard disks, keyboards, and expansion hubs. It also offers Optical & Coaxial IN/OUT and an Ethernet port for wired connection to a network. The USB Type-C port (USB 3.0) on the FiiO R7 supports data transfer, DP output mode, USB DAC, and USB HOST-related functions. The FiiO R7 has a Bluetooth and WiFi antenna embedded into the rear panel with a power switch allowing you to switch between DC or AC power supply.

I have been listening to this for 8+ hours a day on powered speakers and a powered sub (separate).
I was looking for a DAP cum DAC to upgrade my current player (Activo CT10 from iRiver). While I had no complaints. This is just better.
One immediate noticeable element is deeper solid bass. Not boomy (had to spend some time figuring out the crossover and volume).
On low-res Spotify streams, the vocals are clinical, but not unpleasant. On switching to a HD stream, it's a little better, but only slightly. May have to add a tube component somewhere in the chain. Not sure it'd help though.
Mind you, there is nothing wrong. It just stands out. That's all.
Never thought, I'd say this, but the soundstaging is better (Thriller, Money immediately come stand out). You can also make out finer details (can't believe I am writing this as well). But then I am upgrading from an entry level DAP/DAC.
Stringed instruments. Oh man! you can hear the pluck in detail (I mean I could earlier as well, but this is better).
I mentioned bass earlier, but percussion instruments need a mention. In well produced tracks, the sharp bass note and the decay (Flash) is a pleasure to hear. Even in controlled violence (Another one bites the dust) the preciseness is incredible. Of course, this is a function of the speaker as well. But noticeably better.
The items I mentioned above stood out for me. I would have heard these songs hundreds of times before on all sorts of equipment. This is just better.
That said, I was expecting some songs to come out better, but they didn't. For e.g. Paralyzed by Dream Theater. This could be because of source (Amazon HD stream), but can't say, because Barstool Warrior from the same album sounds better.
Some niggles/issues I haven't figured out yet. The volume knob does not work with the RCA connector (Not sure, if this is an issue or by design). This is fine for me, as I have a remote for the speakers. But obviously, the sub doesn't scale accordingly. This works for my setup as it is in my study and I don't need more than this. If this is an issue for you, you'll need to check around on this.
LED rings are a so so feature, with marginal utility (it identifies source quality /output (bluetooth)). I've turned it off.
Things to try:
1) With high-end headphones. I only have the XM5/XM3, which is kinda pointless.
2) Optical connection to the sub (and then speakers)
3) High-res files
4) Tube component (not sure, if I will ever try this)
5) Linear Power Supply (A Youtube reviewer insists it makes it better. No idea if it's true.)
6) Acoustic damping to see if something improves. (I have a lot of glass in the room including French windows)
What's missing?
1) A remote
2) Some vis software would be nice
Who should consider buying?
1) If you listen to a lot of music at home (WFH situation mostly).
2) If you have no dedicated Hi-res player or have an entry level one (like me).
3) If you already have some equipment that can make the most of it.
4) If you can afford it.
Update (16-12-23): FIIO, with an OTA, introduced a system-wide equalizer. I used this with speakers (Edifier) and headphones (HD 650), And this addition gives a phenomenal level of control over how your music sounds.
Bottom line:
This is a no-brainer. Buy!

I am using my Fiio R7 for couple of months now.
My setup:

Streaming Service: Apple Music Family Subscription
Fiio R7: Loads of connectivity options. User interface is not fancy but usable. Stripped Android OS retains Android Play Store accessibility to download apps for any streaming service and makes Fiio R7 stand out of all the streaming devices that may be 5 times more expensive. With AirPlay 2 and Apple Music app on the FIio R7, I get HiRes audio on my system, which is not limited to 16-bit/44.1 kHz (CD Quality). Fiio has done a good job to get HiRes Lossless streaming on Andriod by bypassing the default 48 kHz resampling that stock Android of the age does. Soundstage, imaging and layering are instantly evident and superb. Tonality is very good. Instruments sound so natural and organic. It's a pleasure to listen to the system. I used my Beyerdynamic DT990 Edition 250ohms headphones with Fiio R7 occasionally. Sounds brilliant.
I bought the RM3 remote controller but rarely use it. Only problem that I am currently facing with my system is the random click sound that comes once in a while. It may or may not be related to Fiio R7 though. My system runs on In-Line UPS power supply. I'm not sure if that is the cause of the problem. Fiio sells a device for linear power supply, PL50. I need to check if that will solve the problem. One more thing that Fiio R7 misses is HDMI-ARC. That would have helped. Though some reviews say that I can connect my TV using the USB-C to HDMI / ThunderBolt 3 cable, I couldn't get the connectivity established with my TV. Overall, I am more than satisfied with my current system setup..
Fiio R7 is unique and probably the best (only) All-In-One Streamer & DAC and at a good price. Wiim Amp is probably the only competitor but misses all the connectivity options and therefore not comparable for my system need. I will go for XLR connectivity any day. If you find the device useful, don't worry about it's quality and capability. Just go for it!

I bought a Marshall stanmore 2 this month, is good, but was not satisfied, wanted more! Did some research, came across r7. In fact r7 was always under my radar.
R7 with SP3 is a deadly combo. Perfect in all sense, so happy with my purchase. I don't know how to describe in terms of audio technicalities. But need to listen to to understand what I am saying. No wonder it's having so much positive reviews. Overall build quality and packaging was excellent. Will say apple like.

I purchased this as I wanted something without batteries. As I'm a "Nominal Audiophile", I don't want to comment on the audio quality.
But I can say this: The build quality and packaging are superb. If the same care was taken with the internal design and construction, then... WOW! (See the FiiO official disassembly video on YouTube)
There are a few irritants though... The unit I have rebooted by itself a couple of times. I'm putting it down to instability of Android. I was unable to get it to connect with AptX to my MDR-1000X... it defaulted to SBC. It did connect with AptX-HD with my other headphones... so ok. The plastic screen is a disappointment. It should have been glass. And where is my damn remote?
Now the price... is it expensive! At around ₹ 50,000/-, it will sell like hot-cakes.
Finally, this is really a unique device with a unique form-factor. I'm waiting for the next iteration of this (which has been announced by FiiO, at a price of around 1,200 USD).
