Open-Back Design

Headphones with an open-back design, allow air to pass through the earcups. This means that Open-Backs do not block any noise from around you, as closed-backs do, and music being heard will also leak outside to people around you. So they can only be heard in a quiet environment.

However, Open-back headphones do sound more natural and open. Open-back headphones create a feeling of space, presenting audio as if you are sitting at a live concert. Audiophiles swear by open-back headphones, and they sound quite different to closed-backs.

These headphones are perfect for critical listening sessions, mixing and mastering music. They have an accurate soundstage presentation and precise imaging.

Planar Magnetic Drivers

Planar magnetic drivers combine characteristics of several driver types. They employ magnetic fields akin to dynamic and balanced armature drivers. However, planar magnetic drivers, like electrostatic drivers, use a flat, thin diaphragm in contrast to a coil. The planar drivers are known for their quick transient response.

Needs Amplification

Headphones and IEMs require a certain level of power to sound their best and work at their full potential. When your headphones or IEMs are underpowered, they can sound thin or muffled.

Amplifiers are required to provide adequate power to your headphone or IEMs to perform at their best. Simply put, amplifiers allow a weak audio signal to be boosted to a powerful one.

To put it into perspective, devices such as your phones and laptops come with an amplifier, but they offer very limited output power. This output may not be sufficient to power headphones and IEMs to shine at their best. This is where a dedicated amplifier is required to deliver adequate power to hear your music in all its glory.

Replaceable Cables

A pair of headphones with a replaceable cable has many benefits, and one of them is if the connecting cable has a problem, it doesn’t mean that you have to buy a new one. If the connecting cable gets pulled or damaged, you can replace it and keep using your good-old headphones or IEMs. This way, your headphones will be protected and will last longer. With the advancements in cable manufacturing, you now get a variety of replacement cables with various termination options, lengths and quality.

The Sundara has seen several changes over the years. But the latest version of the Sundara is perhaps the best. You need a serious amplifier to drive this planar magnetic headphone but paired properly, these are a fantastic headphone for any audiophile.

‘Ati-Sundara’ sonically

Before I begin to review the HiFiMan Sundara, I should mention I have been an AKG fan all these years. My last set of cans owned were the 712 Pro. So these will be the base underlying my review.

Even though price-wise it meant a step down, I was curious about the fuss revolving planar magnetic headphones. So I took a leap of faith and purchased these.

In all fairness, I now “get” what dynamic headphones lack. These unmasked a new layer of clarity. A pin drop can be heard as a pin drop without added articulations. They are hands down more detailed in comparison to any of my previously owned cans. They have a tad warm signature with a slight boost on the highs. For those who prefer a flat signature could invest in Sonarworks Reference Headphone’s app. It has an inbuilt profile configured for the Sundara which was a bonus for me! Audio is extremely clinical. Professionally this is of the biggest interest to me.

I have read reviews of the brand in the past and was aware of their issues with build quality. Sundara was an upgrade from their previously weaker cans. But here is where my disappointment crops in. Since these use a metal frame, they are heavy and the pads get clamped a little too hard on the ears. I’ve tried several adjustments but have not been able to find that sweet spot. The pads being circular tends to put uneven pressure on the earlobes. IMO these aren’t comfortable for long listening hours. I can’t go on with these for more than 20 min at a stretch. My ears start to sore and head stars to hurt as a result of the clamping force. This is the sad let down which I’m sure the brand will work on to make user comfort more pleasurable in the future.

I would have loved listening to these for longer periods of time but due to the discomfort I need to refrain and use them only for critical listening when mixing.
Possibly the discomfort is not a common affair. So if one wishes to enter the planar magnetic world, I would highly recommend these. I don’t think I can personally go back to dynamic headphones anymore. Thanks HifiMan for making these affordable and thank you HeadphoneZone for the speedy delivery.
