I am surprised by the performance provided by this small budget (AKM 4493SEQ) DAC. It is more of a neutral DAC and provides clean highs, mids and fuller lows with good seperation when considered its pricepoint. SMSL set an example how a budget desktop DAC can almost compete with other DACs costing twice its price.
I have observed, Optical output is giving a slightly better response ( may be 5-10 percent) than co axial output but it should not be so in digital output domain, I may be wrong.

Absolutely living this little dac, have it connected to my pc via the usb. The first thing that i noticed when it played for the first time is how my soundstage opened up and sound separation improved a fair bit too. It honestly surprised me
I have a dedicated stereo setup for music that includes a Marantz PM6007 amp and Elac Debut 3.0 DB63 speakers. I was using the inbuilt DAC of the Marantz and a Audiocular Spark Hi-Res dongle DAC. The inbuilt DAC of the Marantz sounds decent but nothing extraordinary and the dongle sounded much more detailed in comparison (surprisingly!!!).
I was looking for a crisper, much detailed sound with good amount of instrument separation and sound staging. After much research, I found SMSL SU1 being praised by everyone. So I bought it as the 3rd DAC for my system.
It did perform as per my expectation, giving powerful and energetic sound throughout the whole frequency band without expanding too much of my budget. The notes are crisper, clear and well separated. Even the subtle sound in the music carries weight. This is what I was expecting from my Hi-Fi Hi-Res setup which was earlier missing.
Cons: No option for digital filter is provided. Sounds a bit brighter. EQ can be customised but then the staging is adversely affected. However these cons are minor and are setoff by its brilliant pricing.
Conclusion: If your budget is under 15-17k, this is your end of search. Just go with SMSL SU1.
*Pro tip: Use the Coax as input and power the DAC via a type C 5v DC power bank for stable noise free output. Skip optical, it has 10x more jitter. If input source is a laptop/mobile, get a digital USB interface like SMSL PO100 2024 for high quality USB to Coax conversion. (A single low quality device in an audio chain will ruin the whole experience, so beware!)
**Alternatives: For better fidelity and analog like presentation, skip the IC chip based DAC altogether and choose FPGA DAC like Chord Mojo 2.

This is an amazing sounding cute little DAC.
My current bedroom setup sounds amazing with addition of this DAC.
I'm using a WIIM mini to stream my High Res music via PLEX on Wiim app. The optical out of Wiim mini goes into SMSL SU1 and aux out of SU1 goes into my Active speaker set (Hivi Swans M200 MK3+).
This results is pure bliss!

The SMSL SU-1 is honestly a surprise. At such a small price, it gives a listening experience that feels far beyond what you expect. The sound is clean, detailed, and very enjoyable — even for long sessions.
I use it with an amplifier setup: SMSL SU-1 DAC + Fosi Audio ZK-1002D mini amplifier, and for speakers, I don’t even have a proper hi-fi system. My budget is very low, so I repurposed an old Altec Lansing VS4121. I cut the main speaker line (left & right), connected it to the amplifier, and to my surprise — it works amazingly well.
Most funny part is, I know this speaker is not capable of handling higher wattage, but still it delivers beautifully — all strings, all patterns come alive. I mostly use Apple iTunes and Spotify, and if I get a chance to play through a CD player, the feel is even more special.
Just imagine: this is a very low-budget, basic speaker with no proper hi-fi design, yet with the SU-1 DAC in the chain, it now gives a more patterned, fuller, and more enjoyable sound.
Also, a small tip: when connecting, make sure to select the proper bit depth / kHz settings, because that helps the SU-1 perform at its best.
👉 This is my small step to do R&D. I want to move from each basic level to higher levels — and I wish my dream comes true.
🎵 And to all music lovers or true melomaniacs, remember my simple philosophy: if we give good feed music — a good source — there is no boundary for good sound output from any speaker.

Most of the songs I listen to are from Pink Floyd, Santana, Adele, Jethro Tull, The Doors, and also Indian music legends like Yesudas, Chitra, R.D. Burman, and Ilaiyaraaja. With the SU-1, each of these artists’ music feels more real and emotionally engaging.
Someday I wish to slowly upgrade into better amps and speakers, but no matter where this journey takes me, I will always remember that it all began with the humble SMSL SU-1.

A dac is extremely necessary to play music on apple music lossless and SMSL su1 is the most budget friendly dac but sound is extremely detailed with nice,tight bass.vocals are forward ,sounstage is broad .

SMSL SU 1 is one of a kind DAC With Very Good Sound Quality and Details according to 7.5K Price. You can compare Sound Quality with two or three times More expensive DAC's, bt whenever you'll change Song or Change type of file like DSD / MQA or play pause music there's TICKING and POP sound which is very loud any Annoying otherwise good DAC bt i hv kind of OCD so i can't withstand that problem that's why i returning it bt if u can ignore it then it's best DAC under 15K.

Input via android device is not able to power on this dac.
You must need laptop or computer for USB input.
