FiiO - BR13

This is my 3rd buy from fiio, its a good affordable option if you are looking for an ldac supported bluetooth receiver .

This is a different kind of review - I will start with a different product, I got the FiiO BR13 today and, being the sort of fellow who cannot leave well enough alone, I started testing it immediately. First thing I tried was its Bluetooth side. The BR13 supports a full gamut of codecs — LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX LL, aptX and SBC. I connected it to my desktop and phone at the same time, and that was a genuinely cool nerd moment: music was playing from the desktop, while I was able to tweak the equalizer from the phone app on the fly. That part, I must say, felt very slick.
But then came the more important part: how did it sound?
My feelings were mixed.

The first impression was that the bass was too pronounced, a little more than what I wanted. But that was not entirely the FiiO’s fault. My EQ settings were already tuned for the iBasso DC02 – which I have been using for a long time , so the BR13 was being judged through an old tonal template. That became very obvious when I compared Bluetooth mode and USB DAC mode of the FiiO BR13 against the little iBasso.

Now, on paper, the FiiO BR13 should have looked like big time with all tis high specs. It has an ESS ES9018K2M DAC, a TPA1882 op-amp, and a QCC5125 Bluetooth chip. Its analog output is proper line-level RCA at 2 Vrms, not a headphone out pretending to be a line source. The published numbers are neat and respectable they said it is THD+N < 0.0006% and SNR ≥114 dB in USB/coax/optical decoding mode.

The iBasso DC02, on the other hand, is this much small, almost apologetic-looking USB dongle DAC/headphone amp built around an AKM AK4490EQ. It supports PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz plus native DSD256 – that is really high gor all it has and its size, and its published output is 0.9 Vrms into 32 ohms, with THD+N < 0.001% and a frequency response of 20 Hz–40 kHz ±0.5 dB.
So yes, the FiiO looks cleaner on paper in terms of THD+N, in fact that why I bought it in the first place.
But my ears said something else.

My verdict, at least in this setup, was that the tiny little iBasso DC02 sounded better across the frequency range. I only had to nudge the bass a little to get my desired effect, and after that the whole thing just sat more naturally. The mids felt right, the top end felt better integrated, and the bass, while slightly lighter by default, was better behaved once adjusted. The BR13, by comparison, felt more eager to impress, especially in the low end – that is the main reason it has so many reviews saying its Bass is super and I fell for it.
Now comes the fun part — the part where the audiophile starts arguing with himself.

Because audio is never just specs.
THD+N — Total Harmonic Distortion plus Noise — is an important parameter. It tells us how much unwanted harmonic distortion and noise a device adds to the original signal. Lower is better, yes. But that is not the whole story. One crucial thing many casual comparisons miss is that all distortion is not equally offensive to the ear. Higher-order harmonics are far more psychoacoustically destructive than lower-order ones. So two devices can have similar or even reversed THD+N numbers and still be perceived very differently by the listener.

And then comes the even more dangerous territory: the ear-brain system.
A lot of what audiophiles call “burn-in” may actually be brain burn-in. We get used to a certain tonal balance, a certain bass contour, a certain transient sharpness, a certain way vocals sit in the mix. After months of listening through one DAC, that becomes the brain’s internal reference – you see the one we compare it with others – something like baseline. Then a new DAC comes in, perhaps objectively cleaner, perhaps with a slightly different low-end damping or output behavior, and the first instinct is: something is wrong here. At this point I myust say – It is hell to be an audiophile – nothing can be the best,just because it is not familiar.

That may well be what happened today.
My ears are already tuned to the iBasso presentation. The BR13’s fuller, clearer, perhaps more assertive bass may actually be more accurate in some technical sense, but to my accustomed ears it initially sounded overcooked

Each of them told me something slightly different. Rock told me about bass control and attack. Rahman told me about layering and air. The 80s tracks told me how the DACs handled synth sheen and kick weight. Marvin Gaye told me whether groove – bass - stayed sensual and super.

As of now, the mixed conclusion is this - the bigger, more feature-rich, more technically armed FiiO BR13 came in with its army of codecs and its much tyne older cousin iBasso dongle still was super.

Audio Output is good, One drawback is the selected Equalizer mode was changed to Jaz mode after every power off. Need to change to prefered Equalizer mode after every power on.

If you someone cares about music quality and low on budget, consider this item,don't waste money on other cheap blutooth fancy modules

This is such magic. Used with my Bose, it is now doing an amazing job. Never expected this kind of quality. I highly recommend it, and I'm still exploring the site to gain more knowledge.

BR13 is the very good product it's sound studio quality, comprehensive sound, I always played song with LDAC codec 96k / 32bit. I like it and love it...!

No matter which AV receiver, soundbar or any older music system or home theater you use. They do not have great bluetooth code inbuilt. Fiio BR 13 is a must have tiny device you should have to use with your music system to take it's full potential. I am using Polk Audio Magnifi Max flagship soundbar and it support AAC codec only. My main reason to buy Fiio BR13 is it's support LDAC codec with ESS Sabre DAC. It's a must by product anytime. As always thanks to headphone zone team and bluedart for quick delivery.

Nice BT receiver with awesome sound quality. Great to have LDAC support. Right now using it with Denon AV receiver. After using it the sound quality has improved a lot Vocals, Instruments and bass is well defined now.

Simple design with some very useful features at very affordable price,a must for every person who want to improve their bluetooth audio performance,it gives new life to our old vintage audio system which doesn't have the luxury of bluetooth.only wish if it has headphone out also.

I got a chance to review FIIO BR13. I am a music lover and know a lot about Interconnect,
Devices, Speakers and Amplifiers. Bluetooth is used in vast majority of the devices available nowadays. That is why music lovers keep searching for a device which has very good Bluetooth. I did FIIO BR13 and I was surprised. It has very good quality and advanced Bluetooth circuit and choic of Codecs. If you have a great audio system and speakers then you can enjoy it to the fullest. Other ins-out have good quality.

It's a great experience with a little device in this price range....fiio br13 is great dac with Qualcomm bluetooth LDAC chip & ess dac chip with op amp analog output & it can match level with high end audio dac....if you have good quality audio system then you will experience highend quality of audio....audio quality is very clear with high & low frequency....if you want buy this product then go for it....you get firmware update & device control from fio control app... thanks to headphone zone to provide this kind of product in India...😊

I am still playing around with getting good sound quality from my laptop. And then came B13… I felt I have reached the beginning of sound staging and sound signature… wow is what I felt with this small DAC.. I love it guys.. crisp bass with bright voice.. common this is a bait for spending more on sound quality. You have to try it to feel it. Good one headphonezone.. thanks
